- P. HedleskyGreat movie in two versionsFull disclosure: I do not have the proper equipment to play the 4K discs, so these comments refer to only the Blu-ray Discs. “Nightmare Alley” was my favorite movie of 2021 and this set from Criterion does it full justice. Included are both the theatrical cut of the film, which is in color, and also the de-colored version, subtitled “Vision in Darkness and Light,” aligning it closely with the classic noir films of the 1940s. The latter has an expanded running time, so it’s truly a “director’s cut.”
There are several scenes that run anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes longer than they were in the theatrical release. One of these scenes, involving the character Ezra Grindle, adds an interesting detail about his interest in contacting his deceased sweetheart. There are some new, brief scenes of Stan hallucinating about his father (these last mere seconds) and some scene-setting shots of exteriors. All of these add about 9 minutes to the running time of the black and white version; the color version has the same running time as it did in the original theatrical ‘21 version.
Even though I currently am unable to play the 4K discs, the hefty price for the set (4 discs!) was well worth it. I’ve been eagerly anticipating this ever since Guillermo del Toro teased it online and I was not at all disappointed. - AmazonGreat movie, great purhaseI love the movie. One thing is rather confusing. There is a extended cut that's in B/W. With a nine extra minutes. Guillermo del Toro spends a lot of time on the feel of the. The right coloring is way up there for him. So why not present it in color. With a recommendation to watch it in B/W.
The movie is great. And worth the purchase. Watching from a disk is always better than streaming. - Gary P DeocampoMasterpieceGreat movie and the special features and commentary are amazing!
- Thomas McCallumGuillermo del Toro at his Cinematic Finest"Nightmare Alley," in the 4K + blu ray combination edition just released as part of the Criterion Collection, looks absolutely phenomenal and will dazzle all who watch the superb acting of the entire cast with a special emphasis on the two lead stars, Cate Blanchett and Bradley Cooper. Packed with special features and interviews, place your order for this feature at once if you enjoy collecting physical media. A highlight of Criterion releases is the stunning art covers, and "Nightmare Alley" is no exception. A beautiful release filled with the spectacular contrasting details of a sordid, ugly world cloaked in the seductive elegance of the deep and rich color palette throughout. A remake that really outshines the original. Highly recommended!
- David KeppelA Morality Tale & Most Excellent FableGuillermo Del Toro's adaptation of the source material is masterfully executed and absolutely gorgeous to behold! The Black & White extended version has some of the most beautiful cinematography I have ever seen! He assembled a dream cast to tell his tale and all of the actors bring their A Game.
I love the earlier film version of Nightmare Alley, which is also in the Criterion Collection but this is honestly a more fleshed out version and perhaps, a better movie.
This is a spectacular film and a very welcome addition to the prestigious catalog of a modern master.
Great! - starlightspacelab9 minutesEven more beautiful in black and white and yes the director's cut is 159 iso 150 so only 9 minutes longer however somebody rating the movie release with only one star because of that seems ridiculous imo. So yes this release is highly recommended.
- andionly 9 min longer.....????only 9 min longer......Shame not Worth it to Pay again for it With or without Black & White version.....20 or 30 min longer YES.....
- william ibarrondoGDT in prime formBeautiful release. Comes with the Black and White extended version of the film as well.
