Top reviews from the United States

  • Ken Russell Movie in 4K
Very cool but disturbing movie. The 4K video looks amazing and the audio is really good! Pick this up in 4K!
  • Great addition to the collection.
Probably the best you've ever seen this at home. Criterion has done it again with an amazing transfer and collection of extras. It had been decades since I had seen this movie, and it was nice seeing William Hurt again. The movie itself is a trip (it's supposed to be), and the effects (especially the makeup effects) hold up. A great addition to your physical media collection.
  • excellent 4k disc release
I will echo what blu-ray.com said about this disc and say this is a great 4k disc presentation of Altered States. The video and audio technical merits are excellent, and if you liked this movie from way back in 1980 (I saw this when it was initially released) you surely won't be disappointed with this purchase.
  • Criterion knocks it out of the park again
Excellent video and audio presentation. It includes a wealth of supplements that should satisfy any hardcore fan.
  • Commentary not available for hearing impaired
You purchase from Criterion because you want the most exhaustive examination of your favorite movie. They do deliver, but unfortunately if you are hearing impaired the commentary that runs with the movie is not available to you in text form. I'm willing to pay extra for supplements but if they're not accessible then what is the point? Possibly a printed text of the commentary could be included. Criterion products are pricy, I expected more.
  • Great Movie, Pretty Good 4K
I saw Altered States in the theater when it first came out, and this 4K edition is quite reminiscent of that experience. Most of the film is dark, but nothing really gets "crushed" in the darkness. The sound is very good, with excellent immersion, at least for a movie this old. That brings me to a potential negative - this 4K release is not the sharpest you'll see, and some scenes are really on the soft side; I think the issue lies in the elements of the film itself, and no amount of increased resolution is going improve on that. Good overall, but wait for a sale.
