- DWCBetter preparation!Quite an adventure! It started yesterday when I tried to install 2024 TurboTax Deluxe (included both Federal + State) on my late 2015 iMac. I saw no warnings concerning this TurboTax version requiring Mac OS 13 to run (although I’ve learned a good lesson about thoroughly checking on this matter BEFORE ordering the software). I guess that I was fortunately able to upgrade the Mac OS each time this that was required in the past. Well, because I was so “distraught” (really whiny) about this, I contacted Intuit and requested a refund. I have been using TurboTax for Mac since it was called MacInTax in the 1980s. I really like my iMac so I looked online and found that H&R block software requires OS 12 (which is what my iMac runs on…and actually other sites report that it can run on Mac OS as early as 10.15 and higher (which was even more encouraging). I purchased the H&R Block 2024 Tax Software (which definitely stated that it INCLUDED both Federal and State…price was $49.97 (supposedly a 17% discount off of the regular price) on Amazon today. Installation was a bit of a challenge but I really appreciate the advice of other buyer’s comments on the Amazon site. There are glitches that are annoying that I couldn’t correct (such as the program disagreeing that the W2 box 1 value wasn’t correct (which appeared to be due to the numerical figure not being able to extend all the way to the right of the box) and that the figure in W2 box 1 was somehow different from the figure in box 16 (which were both correct on the W2 form). The real kicker was when I got to the State section with the instructions “congratulating me on getting to this point” and that the only thing left was to pay another $39.95 to purchase the state program (which was supposed to already be part of the purchase – I made absolutely sure about this before I purchased this version of the H&R tax software for 2024). I know that the very helpful individuals that suggested that such an occurrence was possibly due to a purchasing error (which definitely wasn’t the case). Also, another helpful suggestion was that the State program had been accidently deleted (not a chance because it apparently was just never included with this version of H&R Block 2024). Well, I definitely am not going to spend another $39.95 for something that I already paid for (the state program) so I’m going to “eat it” again and abandon H&R Block, buy a- new Mac computer, and repurchase TurboTax. I am glad that others have had great experiences with H&R Block software over the years! But for me, it’s been quite an adventure!

It did what it needed to do, just like always, guiding me through the annual ritual sacrifice to the government gods.

- Jon T. LemkeDO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.I am a very long term Turbo Tax customer and have used the product since at least 2009 (and probably longer than that). What was once a great program has gotten progressively worse, but this year hit a new low. This year the program began requiring registering with Turbo Tax to even use the program. This would be annoying enough if the process works. It doesn't. From my extensive conversations with support, their team is fully aware of the problem but unable or unwilling to fix it.
In brief, after using the program and creating an account, the program required to verify my login, which failed. I spent a substantial amount of time trying various options, all of which resulted in a loop that would be funny if it wasn't so frustrating. I tried saying I forgot my password, it would go through the process of resetting it (including email verification), and then immediately prompt me to enter a password before I'd even reset it.
I eventually decided to call support. There was a long interactive voice response system that seemed designed simply to frustrate people into not calling. It went through a very long process of making record my name, which it would then repeatedly get wrong and make me repeat and then eventually spell out, and then it would still get it wrong. Eventually it completed this "game" and was (after a wait) transferred to a representative). Their first question was "what's your name"? So much for providing it in advance.
After a long process of exploring options that rep said the easiest way to go forward would be to create a new account and simply give up on the old account. I confirmed, repeatedly, that I would NOT need to buy the whole program again (that would be dumb) and would be able to reactivate my old license. I was assured in no uncertain terms that it would work. It didn't.
I called back. I played the same "let's say your name" game a second time. I spoke to a rep who said that I would need to get a refund. Except she couldn't give me a refund. She suggested asking Amazon for a refund (too bad, it's over 60 days, so no option there, that's what I get for buying early). So she has to chat (online chat, apparently, she was working from home and having problems with a barking dog) with a more senior representative. She vocally expressed her frustration with the chat process (and again, this was a Turbo Tax paid support person) and how they weren't listening to her and were ignoring what she was telling them.
She was eventually informed that she couldn't help me and I'd need to talk to another department to get help and possible a refund. She transferred me. I was informed that there was a 45 minute wait to speak to someone but that they'd call me back. I'm waiting. I don't have high hopes.
Do yourself a favor. Don't use Turbo Tax. It's not worth it. It use to be good. Then it was OK. Not it doesn't work and wastes your time. Stay away. - RogstadExcellent product, works greatExcellent product, works great
