- Bill in AZSimplifies The PC Migration ProcessBuilt two new PC towers to accommodate the mandatory move to Windows 11. Have done this in the past tediously manually moving files and settings.
Decided to try 'automating' the migration process this time. After reading reviews of alternatives and exchanging a few questions with their tech support I decided to use this product. Did receive some wrong answers saying I could not connect the two computers over switches in the home network implying I needed to revise patching to route directly within router's ports. Proved not to be true.
Went well on first PC. There are a lot of things happening in the background to ensure the right files are transferred for which I give the company credit. Despite the instructions pdf, I still had to make use of the 24 hour tech support chat. Gives a nice summary what was successfully moved and which things were not moved because they don't apply or are not compatible.
PC #2 went well on first migration. Unfortunately, there was a Microsoft networking problem within the house (don't get me started on that), that required me to do a second and then third 'clean install' that required me to migrate from the old to new PC multiple times. Definitely do not abandon the prior PC for some months until you are certain of stability. Had to interact with 7x24 again to make those passes. Cooperative although a little tedious in chat to be walking from room to room between the PCs.
Although there is a stated time limit for how long the license is valid between the specific pair of PCs, it appears if you have a problem beyond that and need to repeat the transfer, they can reenable the license for new sessions.
Do take note that I found Amazon to be the best pricing. Despite being given a 'special offer' for the two licensed I needed if purchased directly from their web site, purchasing through Amazon was significantly better.
Having also previously migrated my wife's cousin's PC by hand, I wish I would have sprung for the cost of this app to do that one. - J. ReidDoes 90% of the hard work in moving to a new PCBy far the easiest way to move to a new PC. In just a few hours all your data, many settings, and many of your apps are setup on the new PC.
PCMover doesn't handle everything. Some apps will need to be installed manually. Some settings will need to be established. You may have to initialize some apps on their first use.
But what PCMover does is handle 90% of the work for you. I've used it for every new Windows PC we bought over the past decade. - E. KraemerTransfer applicaions... not.Ok to transfer data, even multiple users, but applications, NO. This was a Win10Pro to Win11Pro transition. Granted they tell you that SOME applications may not transfer or have to be reinstalled, but Microsoft Office?? Microsoft, in its infinite INSANITY, will autoload Office365, because EVERYONE NEEDS Office, well, when PC Mover does its STUPIDITY, it really screws the pooch. I had to download a tool from MS to forcibly yank every Office application from the new system, then reinstall Office2019H&B. QuickBooks Desktop was another nightmare, but fortunately it would allow the uninstall. The after action report stated that Google Chrome transferred properly, and it was the latest version available at the time, but required a forcible update to the EXISTING version. I don't want to talk about the fiasco with UPS Worldship - that took 30 minutes with a UPS tech muttering obscenities to fix. And if there is ANY REGISTRY GARBAGE in the old system, presto, it is now in the new system. In the end result, the data transfer was nice, but I probably could have done it faster manually by yanking the old drive and connecting it via USB3... less expensive too by not purchasing this product. The application problems, yes, there were others, EXTENDED the amount of time required by a minimum of two hours, probably three. I can say that it migrated the Printers properly - UPS Lables and an Epson XP-440 - both connected via USB [but not at the time of transfer].
Note that this was a Stand Alone system, not a DOMAIN connected system, but it did have Network Shares configured. While the shares LOOKED ok on the new system, neither worked and had to be re-established.
All in all a disapointment that I have no one to blame but myself for thinking that this newer version would actually work. The product is an OVERSELL, at least where modern applications are concerned. There are just too many tricky things that application installers do, this includes Microsoft. MAC has a Hardware and Software Bible, and you follow their Bible or you do not sell your product. Microsoft is more Laissez Faire, and everyone breaks the rules, even Microsoft.
For a NOOB, that only needs DATA transfered, it might pass the smell test, BUT FOR ME it was a complete waste of my time and money. FYI, this is not my first barbecue with PC MOVER [many years ago], and it is still an overrated POS. Your Milage May Vary. - LegalEagle2Works fairly well IF...I used this software to move from one Windows 10 desktop to a newer Windows 10 desktop. The result turned out fairly well after making some adjustments after several trials and errors. The main issue I had was the transfer kept freezing saying the connection had gone bad. Thus what should have taken a few hours transferring a 500 GB drive started to take over 11 hours due to the freezing. My recommendation to fix that was to use a ethernet cable between the two PCs, to turn off the wifi on both machines and to remove (not just turn off) any anti-virus programs on the older machine. That reduced the transfer time to five hours. I also liked the advanced features of the program which allowed me to pick which drive to transfer because my older computer had a 1TB SSD and a 1 TB HDD, which was a backup to the SSD, and therefore did not need to be transferred. In the end most of my programs did transfer along with the data files, although you may need to restart them after the program. My settings generally did transfer and the desktop screen was the same.
