  • Another Exceptional Historic Novel by Ken Follett
Once again Ken has written a compelling story that keeps you riveted from beginning to end. The characters are beautifully and realistically drawn so that you care about the heroes and despise the villains. The fascinating historic details make you feel as if you have traveled back to the time period of the story. Ken takes you on a great adventure that you don’t want to end. I highly recommend this awesome book.
  • Base 10 Comes to Life
Circle of Days was a most enjoyable tale of the predecessor of Stonehenge, its design, the its maintenance, its use and value...overall, the vital role it played in the lives of the communities around it. Though long, the novel moved briskly and offered fascinating ideas of how people lived in this very distant age. The only complaint I have about the novel is the near perfect English (with often surprising vocabulary) that the characters spoke. Aside from the language level, as I said, I found Circle of Days (the meaning of the title becomes clear) very enjoyable.
  • Enjoyed Circle of Days Thoroughly
Read this book in two weeks time. Couldn’t wait to have a sit down and read daily.

There were many characters to follow. People came and left into the tale though a few remained throughout. So, was challenged a bit about who was who but pushed on regardless.

The author clearly gave a lot of thought and research into how the monuments were identified, transported and eventually erected. I wondered how he concluded with the methodology he chose to employ for the main craftsman?

Also, the division of the tribes into so many subgroups ( herders, miners, farmers, woodsmen, and other artisans ) etc was interesting. It reflected the division of labor at that time but each having their own language and rules such as the role of women .

Sadly , I was reminded as I encountered the BIG MAN for the farmers how little life has changed. Is conflict inevitable? It appears from Mr Folletts that is in our nature. Contemporary politics would bear him out.
  • A slow read for the first half
A long time fan of the author and love a good long book, that said, the number 1 rule in writing is show don't tell and Follett is always explaining why the characters think and act the way they do, which sometimes makes the reader feel dumb.

Overall the characters seem cardboard and don't live up to other Follett books. Troon the farmer headman seems dubious to me and has very shallow motives that the author spends little time explaining how they got that way.

Read Column of Fire, a fantastic book that I've read three times and it is rich in history, passion, motives and color of landscape, weather and clothes, food, that all take you right into the time

Does not really get into building Stonehenge until about 60% of the novel is past with the farmers fighting the herders and then the woodlanders who’s women go naked while the men wear a loin cloth

A slow read. I’ll finish it but then go read Column of Fire again to compare

I have now finished it and wonder it Follett wrote the outline and someone else wrote the book. Does not hold a candle to this wonderful authors previous work
  • Another epic masterpiece by an unparalleled writer
I tore through this in ten days, fast considering the heft of this tome. Stayed up way past my bedtime on multiple nights, and could not put it down. Thought about it when I wasn't reading. Will remember it. I loved the characters, the story, the setting.

Seft: talented miner who escapes an abusive family to seek a new life... he's brilliant with his ideas and supports his woman. His journey is one of love and leadership.

Joia: sapphic, visionary priestess full of ambition yet also naive, a spiritual leader and practical teacher with a kind, honest heart who you just YEARN for her to achieve all she wants.

Troon: violent and misogynistic OG evil, representing oppression, jealousy and spite. I could not wait for him to get his due.

Ani: matriarch and peacemaker, lifelong widow by choice and respected elder.

Plus SO MANY other wonderful, diverse, historically-reflective characters.

I experienced joy, anger, frustration, wanting... I was completely drawn in and immersed in the story.
Another epic masterpiece by an unparalleled writer.
Adding to my Favorites shelf and absolutely recommend (if you're into historic fiction).
  • You May Find You Are Reading About Today
There is a feeling that history repeats. The farmers hate the herders, the herders hate the farmers, Very much like current society, Mr. Follett writes his stories with a depth in human feelings. Wonderful story telling. At times the story is grim and brutal. Much like today's news.
  • Wonderful Story
Circle of Days is another example of this author's wonderful storytelling. Like nearly all of Follett's novels, it's set in the past. This time about 2,500 BCE. Intriguing characters, both good and bad. Richly described settings. Love and hate. War and peace. I highly recommend this book, and it motivated me to go back and reread Follett's "Pillars of the Earth".
  • Follett does it again.
For fans of Pillars of the Earth, and for fans of women, especially, this latest historical tome about how Stonehenge may have come to be, from Mr Follett is both engaging and edifying. While he has never been reticent to feature strong women in his stories, it is timely and satisfying to have the main character a complicated and strong female, whose life Is interesting as well as regular! We are so often subjected to the notion that our ancient ancestors were simple or even stupid, the fact is that yes, their lives may have been simpler in many ways but they were in no way less subjected to the same challenges and triumphs that we are in the modern day, something the author is well aware of and deft at relaying. I found it a wonderful, thoughtful novel to get lost in, easy to read, and a perfect distraction.
