  • An Emotional Rollercoaster I’ll Never Forget
There just aren’t enough words to explain how much I loved this book. Yes, it was long, but I devoured every single word, sometimes even rereading passages just to make sure I caught every detail. This review is going to be all over the place because I just finished it, and I’m still a mess. Honestly, there’s no way to sum it up; too much happens in this story for that.

The twists and turns still have me reeling. The ending made me cry and completely took my breath away. This is a masterpiece, easily one of my favorite books of the year so far, and maybe even in my top five of all time. I already know I’ll reread it at least once. The way the author brought each character to life was brilliant, and the storyline went in directions I never expected, which made it completely unique for me.

This book had everything: heartbreaking moments, laugh-out-loud scenes, parts that made me so angry I had to put the book down, and passages that made me stop and ask myself, What would I do in this situation? It truly covered the full range of emotions.

Saint and Patch will forever be two of my favorite characters. This story is going to stay with me for a long time. The way the author wove everything together was nothing short of amazing, raising the bar for what I’d call a complex, unforgettable tale.

I’m glad I have the hardcover for my shelf, but I’ll also be picking up a paperback (my favorite) or the Kindle edition for an easier reread.

Now, off to see how many more books I can get my hands on by this author. :)
  • I didn’t want it to end, I didn’t want to let go of this story
I didn’t want it to end. That’s saying a lot after 600 pages. This was one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. The author created the most beautiful, emotional, loving, heartbreaking, story that was even a thriller/mystery that took place over many years.

It starts out with a great friendship between two young kids and then a horrifying scene that sets the course of the novel. The writing is exquisite and paints the characters and the details of the scenes in great depth and beauty. Each word is written purposefully and beautifully. I feel like I can see the characters and they’ve become a part of me. I have come to know the town of Monte Clare like it’s my own home.

There has been so much written about this book and so many reviews that there really isn’t much more to add other than please do not be dissuaded by the length. It is written so well that the pages flow by as you are drawn into this incredible story. It is fantastic. I am left with a feeling of love and hope and the amazing resilience of lasting friendships and perseverance. Do not pass this up!
  • A Good Long Read
I'm a fan of long novels, and this comes in at over 500 pages, so that was something that initially attracted me to the story. I had never read this author before, and I confess to a guilt of getting stuck on two or three particular authors over time, so it felt good to take a chance on this novel as it was promoted in my kindle.

What I liked about the novel were the twists and turns, and the character development in general. There's nothing I loathe more than reading a book and feeling I can't picture myself in a scene, or see what the character sees, or worst of all, getting to the end of the book and thinking .... yeah but who *was* she?

Overall, this book does a good job of drawing the reader in from the beginning. I would say for me it was one that I was definitely caught up in reading --- although --- at 500 pages, there are understandably places mid-book where it does get a little long in the tooth, and certain elements become redundant. (Minus one star) That's something I'd rather avoid in my reading, but for the overall pace of the story before and after those lulls, I'm going to forgive it.

One thing that kind of made me laugh as I was reading this book ---- many years ago I was watching the film Legends of the Fall which I love and had seen before. My friend, new to the movie, in the middle of (one of many) sad scenes, yells out "Come ON, no one has that much bad luck!" But friends...... sometimes it happens, and this book while not sad, is an example of the apparent tragedies that happen and go on to form the course of our lives, for better or worse. Sometimes over time we are fortunate, and see that without those tragedies, without the heartaches, one thing or another may never have happened. I think this book illustrates that quite well.

I'll definitely be exploring other works from this author, and you should too!
  • A Tapestry of Truth and Trauma
All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker is a knockout—a 5-star triumph that hooked me from its opening pages and never let go. This literary thriller delivers everything I crave: a sprawling story, characters who feel like family, and a mystery that keeps you guessing. Set against the gritty backdrop of 1970s small-town America, it weaves a tapestry of love, sacrifice, and raw family drama that hits all the right notes. The scope feels massive, not just in its sweeping timeline but in how it captures the heart of a community grappling with loss. Every moment, from quiet glances to heart-wrenching decisions, lands with weight, making the stakes feel deeply personal yet universally human.

The characters are the soul of the story. Each one—whether a stubborn kid chasing truth or a parent buckling under life’s pressures—feels alive, their choices and flaws pulling you into their world. Their bonds, tested by secrets and loyalty, gave me characters I rooted for and ached with. The mystery at the core is gripping, layered with twists that unfold naturally, never feeling forced. Love and sacrifice shine through, especially in the family dynamics, which are messy, real, and unforgettable. The ending? Pure gold—satisfying and earned, tying up the emotional threads in a way that left me nodding in appreciation.

Overall, this book left me moved and eager to share it with others. It’s a must-read for anyone who loves epic stories with heart, mystery, and characters who stay with you. I’m still thinking about it, and that’s the mark of something special.
