All is told from the perspective of a woman with little to lose -- or seemingly gain -- from her decision to literally walk away from her 1950s Maine to see the Pacific Ocean. Annie Wilkins is an unlikely larger-than-life hero who lived into her 60's as a invisible subsistence farm woman of a bygone generation. When she decided to live out her dream, she chose the very best companions for her journey -- two horses and a faithful, friendly dog. The story is romantic and cruel, exciting and down-to-earth. It should become a common and beloved American tale for every person -- young and old.

- Beth Sa Once in a life time JourneyLoved the book! I got a real sense of Annie through the descriptions and dialog. She was a salt of the earth woman. Her idea of traveling by horse across the country worked in part because of her lack of seeing “THE WHOLE PICTURE” I also loved the historical feature of the times she lived in. It is a quick and interesting read.
- pollymomThe story was amazing...the writing was pretty ordinary.The story was amazing but told dispassionately without much drama or feeling...like a reporter telling just the facts. It was such a dramatic and sometimes truly perilous journey... So many hair raising and scary events...wish the writing matched the drama of the 3000 + mile journey across America in the 1950's. Would have given this book 5 stars if it was written with the feeling and depth it deserved. Not sorry I read it but sorry it was not a "Great " Read, AZ it should have been.
was filled with facts about 1950's America that I enjoyed reading about. I was born at the end of 1954....and some of the things happening in the story were still happening in the early 1960's when I was a middle aged kid...things about cars, and travel, roads and locations I remember while growing up in various places in California.
An epic story should be told with epic proportions!
Wish this one...such a unique and meaningful experience deserves an epic storytelling... Not so, here...sad to say. - Kindle CustomerVery well written.This is hard for me to review. It is very well written, well researched and interesting. Annie was a very interesting character and what she did was just amazing. Like another reviewer, I was upset that both of her horses died by her actions, though not intentional. While what Annie did was amazing, I felt it was also foolhardy and she put her animals at risk. But it is an interesting book and a good description of the U.S. in the 1950s.
