5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Must-Have Switch Games

I wanted to get this game at release, but waited because I had such a large backlog of games. I still do, but finally decided to pick up Luigi's Mansion 3 after watching a Polygon video about the game's animation.

I'm glad I did. The game is great! The single-player experience is fun, yet stimulating, and I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, I haven't had a good opportunity to test out the multiplayer modes outside of a few online matches with strangers, but I hope to do so soon.

Next Level Games is the developer, and they did a superb job here, particularly with the animation. Every move Luigi makes feels grounded, with the animation really selling the physics, which in turn causes the player to buy into the experience more. You understand who Luigi is as a character just buy watching him open a door, turn his flashlight on and off, get startled by a ghost behind him, etc. The game looks incredible compared to other Switch games!

As with Luigi's Mansion 2 on the 3DS (also developed by Next Level), the spooky atmosphere is somewhat lacking compared to the GameCube original, but the thematic floors more than make up for it, and the plethora of new mechanics added make it a much richer and deep experience on a gameplay level. The puzzles can be challenging, particular if you're doing a completionist playthrough where you try to get all six gems on each floor, along with capturing each floor's Boo.

Really, my only complaint is that there really isn't any reason to collect money or find all the secrets, aside from personal pride. The reward for capturing all the Boos is that Luigi's flashlight shines a Boo face on walls, and getting all 102 gems only lets you buy a blinged-out Poltergust. That's it. And money only lets you buy extra lives, Boo trackers, and hints that show you the rough locations of gems on a floor. Why not make extra costumes something you can spend your money on? The player is constantly rewarded for finding secrets and defeating enemies with loads of dollars and coins, but you can't use them for anything!

All in all, I highly recommend Luigi's Mansion 3. It's up there with Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as great original Switch games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yep, it's just as good as they say.

That should be pretty much enough right there. I mean, if you're reading the user reviews than you've heard about this game. You've probably even read the professional reviews so you're really just poking around to see if those of us that have played the game have anything different to say.

Nope. Nothing really to add because it really is just as good as the all those excited reviewers are saying.

Yeah, it's a little short but, trust me, I think a bunch of that is due to folks trying to race through the content- which is sooo not the way this game is supposed to be played. I mean, let's face it, platforming little twists aside, it's an adventure/puzzler- if it moves then you move it, if it presses you press it, if it opens then you open it, if it closes then you close it, etc, etc, etc. That's part of the fun of this time of game for crying out loud and, the developers here have definitely made all of those moving/pressing/opening/closing/poking/etc a LOT more fun than I have seen in a game of this type in YEARS. :D

Honestly never thought I would ever see the day, particularly after Odyssey but.... I'm not gonna front here: other than it being a little too short, I find myself liking Luigi waaaaay better than his brother. The plot may not be sophisticated compared to other game franchises, but it's far more interesting (and amusing!) than anything Mario ever got himself embroiled in and Luigi is just far more enjoyable to spend the evening with to me.

Mario, after all, is going to have SOME aggravation surrounding not being able to move fast enough at some point but Luigi generally leaves you alternatively scratching your head in puzzlement while you carefully explore and laughing out loud. Dunno what it is but, somehow, yet again, it's always the overlooked sibling in the family that winds up the one I wanna hang out with.

Whatever it is about this game, Luigi is officially now my favorite brother, hands down and I seriously hope they make more (and much larger!) titles for many, many years to come. In fact, I'm just waiting for the announcement for 4 at this point so I can budget for it.

So, yes dear reader, just hit the "buy" button and sit down the night it comes with some popcorn and a drink and hang out for awhile. Luigi's Mansion is definitely going to give you a few nights of some fun wandering and puzzling as long as you're not determined to try to race to that "finish" line as quickly as you can. :D

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-crafted wholesome adventure.

Gifted to my 6-year-old son. His eyes lit up immediately, and he was enamored by the graphics, design, and storyline. Some scenes and tasks were a bit hard for him, so he often had difficulty stopping after his 20 minutes of play. I wish it had an easier "save" functionality.

Even so, it was a wholesome adventure and learning experience.

Happy to report that he won the game (with some considerable help from a parent).

Parent approved.

Note: This seller was stellar, and even though it didn't have original packaging, the game worked smoothly.
