It's going to be expensive to run. That aside, I like that it has different fonts, different styles, different sizes, and it makes it easy to move between these different choices. - Pamela WatsonYou need 6 AAA batteries or buy a wall chargerAlthough I've wanted a label maker for a long time, I've never purchased one. The price point on this little beauty pushed me over the edge, BUT I had no clue how to operate it. First off, it needs batteries (6 AAA) or you have to buy a wall charger separately. It doesn't really say that in the description, so I had to make a trip to the dollar store this morning. Then, there is no operating manual, only a pictorial guide to installing the tape cartridge (easy) and batteries. Then you're on your own. If you know and understand the symbols, you're good to go. I, however, had to find a video tutorial, which I did (try Mom the Maker of Stuff on YouTube, she has a good one). I've included my scribbly notes in the photos, but here are the basics. The five buttons across the top of the qwerty keyboard are (left to right):
Fonts (there are three of them, Helsinki, Brussels, and Berlin)
Font Size (large medium, small)
Font Style (normal, bold, outline, shadow, italic, italic bold, vertical)
Frames or borders (15 of them such as shapes, stars, hearts, cars, unicorns, etc.)
Symbols (250 of them) I haven't fiddled with this one much yet
Hit the return key/arrow to update you selection and to get out of that part, you can always go back and change it
You can change the length of the label from auto (about 2 1/2 inches to a size from 1.2 inches to 12 inches
It really is quite an amazing machine, especially for the price. I bought it to label my punches (I'm a scrapbooker), but I think it's going to be a lot of fun finding new projects. - MoneyMomSo Nice to Be Able to Use More Characters!This Brother label maker is an upgrade of our previous Brother label maker, which supported only alphabetic characters and the digits 1-9. This new label maker supports a full array of special characters, the most useful of which is the simple comma. The label maker does NOT come with a full spool of label tape; you have to purchase that and the electrical charger (if you want one) separately from Brother. The label cartridge that comes with the label maker is a tester to let you verify that your label maker is operating properly. The label cartridges are simple to install, and the overall design is easy to use. I'm very satisfied with this purchase.
- T. PantaziBest label maker for the priceI have had several more expensive Brother label makers and realized I rarely use the extra features. On the other hand, when an expensive unit dies, I am slow to replace it. This prints the sizes I use most and does it nicely.
It doesn't have a great display, in fact, my sight has gotten bad as I have aged so I require a brightly lit area to read it. That is why I didn't give it 5 stars. If that isn't a problem for you then it could be a 5 star product.
Of the features it doesn't have that I notice the most, I would say the manual cutter. Although, that is very minor detail and in some ways a benefit. When I print multiple copies, unlike the auto cutters, it prints a long strip with dots to show where to cut with scissors. This allows me to make tape with a message! I am sure, the auto cutters CAN do this, but the manual made it obvious!
