If you’re looking for a novel that celebrates the strength of the human spirit and the magic of friendship, "The Secret Book Society" is an absolute must-read. Prepare to be uplifted and inspired by this remarkable story! - Stephanie_SLOVED IT!Another wonderful book by Madeline Martin! If you love stories about female empowerment and sisterhood, then The Secret Book Society is definitely one you should add to your to-be-read list. I truly loved the friendship and camaraderie between Lady Duxbury, Eleanor, Lavinia, and Rose. Each of them have their own individual struggles and heartaches, and the way they stand up for each other and cheer each other on is so endearing. I found myself rooting for them also, and I lost count of the many times I clapped loudly and yelled "You go, girl!" while driving and listening to this audiobook. LOL. Madeline Martin is such an amazing storyteller, and her words flow effortlessly and beautifully. Also, I feel like I'm always learning something new (historically) when I read her work, and this time was no different. I didn't realize during this time period how many women were sent to mental institutions just for not bending to the "rules" of this era, when it was looked down upon for women to read and - heaven forbid - have their own thoughts and opinions. And what can I say about my favorite narrator, Saskia Maarleveld, that I haven't already said countless times before? She is simply incredible. I would happily listen to her recite the alphabet over and over again. When she and Madeline Martin join forces on a story, it's pure magic.
- isabelHighly recommendedReally enjoyed this book! It’s like Bridgerton but for married women. Amazing story, love the characters
- Wildlife GazerMost compelling book I've read in years!WOW! What a novel based on research of history. It's no wonder there is a waitlist at every library. I put my schedule on hold to read through this book in 3 days! I tried to pace myself so it wouldn't end! Its worth every penny and I will donate this hardback copy to the local library
- sharon f. leffBrave Sisterhood of Women.Women’s Suffragette Movement in England might not have occurred unless women could trust each other, converse freely, and unite firmly. No better way to unify these upper echelons of women trapped in gilded cages, unable to choose what they ate, how they dressed, and what they did. Among the wealthiest families, some husbands for generations had “owned” their wives, considering them as props or property. Free to abuse and/or control women, these men limited every aspect of the lives of their wives. Always these men could declare any disobedient wife as mentally unstable and/or unwell, requiring admittance to a mental asylum.
Had women not formulated the means to openly gather, the choices, options, and thinking needed may never empowered them. This is a story about the ways in which books can foster changes and hopes. Very inspiring. To value the freedoms many women enjoy, they need only read and imagine the fate of these women who had been trapped until the secret book society emerged. - Laura Romanohad some promiseIt started with an interesting premise but the characters, particularly the supporting characters, became too stereotypical. Ending was easily guessed about halfway through.

- Jenna's Just ReadingBeautifully Written⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"The Secret Book Society" by Madeline Martin is such a warm, heartfelt read. This isn’t a story driven by action-packed adventure or swoony romance—it’s something quieter, deeper, and ultimately more powerful.
What really made this book shine for me was the character development. Each of the four women felt distinct, layered, and real. Their struggles, insecurities, and triumphs pulled me in, but what truly captured my heart was the way their stories wove together. The relationships between the women—their friendship, loyalty, and growth—were beautifully written and so moving.
This book is a celebration of female friendship and the strength that comes from women supporting women. It’s about how our individual journeys matter, but also how much stronger we become when we walk alongside one another.
If you’re looking for a novel that honors the bonds of friendship and leaves you with that cozy, inspired feeling, "The Secret Book Society" is the perfect choice.
