- AdamLight and fast option for smaller driveways and walkways. So far so good. First significant snowfall of the season 4-6" and it cleared our two car driveway and sidewalk in front of the house quickly. No complaints, and for an electric snowblower I thought it did a remarkably good job. Managing the cord is a little troublesome, but that would be true of any electric model. Had enough power to launch this morning's medium-wet snow a good 10-15 feet and cut the driveway clear time to just a few minutes. Other bonus.. Its light enough to easily pick up and move to another location. Make sure your cord is long enough.
Even handled the plowed salted slush at the end of the driveway (threw it just far enough away to be useful).
Update 1-28-15
With a little reluctance the WEN managed to clear the end of our driveway after the New England Blizzard of 2015. This was above and beyond the call of duty for this little machine. Technically the sixth largest snowfall in history for our area. We had 2-3 feet of base snow fall and 3-4 foot snow drifts blocking the end of our driveway where the plows had blocked us. There is no way the snowblower could tackle the base snow that fell without assistance (its mouth is only about a foot high). However, with a little ingenuity we made it work. We decided to clear one small area and then chop / drag the snow back with a shovel (not really shoveling, just a downward chop a foot or two at a time). We then used the WEN to blow the chopped up snow out of the way. This worked extremely well and we managed to clear our (2 car wide / 1 car deep) driveway in about an hour and a half. We went back out today and the snow was somewhat denser, yet we still managed to re-clear 4" or so of additional snowfall and the area where the plows had blocked us in. Additionally we cleared a 50+ ft path down our sidewalk the width of the machine using the same approach. I would estimate an additional 45 minutes to clear the sidewalk 18" wide.
Notes on heavy usage like this. This should be a no-brainer, but it got us... Make sure you don't have any other appliances running on the same circuit as the snowblower. The circuit we used was shared with our porch light and an interior outlet. We tripped the breaker not realizing we had another appliance going.
I unplugged the cord a handful of times by accident, oops, cords are inconvenient, but a good flexible winter cord goes a long way. Take a bite of the cord with your hand so you know when your out of slack.
The Snow Blaster does not like slushy snow. The chute clogged quickly in the slushy mix at the end of the driveway. Happened 3 or 4 times during our entire clearing. Not sure how the WEN will handle a really wet mix (probably not well), but the more dry and compacted snow wasn't an issue.
If the blower bogs down, use it as a cue to take smaller bites of snow.
Its small and light enough that I can bring it inside between runs and down a flight of stairs to the basement where it can dry off.
Extremely happy with our purchase. I was very nervous about not buying a gas single or dual stage for our driveway, but this was a great and affordable compromise that is small and lightweight enough to maneuver in some tighter spots. I feel like I got my money's worth out of the item after one storm, but considering the job it did during this Blizzard it has more than paid for itself. If your looking for something to clear a 100+ft 2 car driveway, you might want to consider a larger gas two-stage, but for smaller jobs or with a little creativity this will work in a pinch if you work within its limitations. - michael p healeyThis thing is super impressive!I bought it last year but unfortunately didn't have a chance to test it out. Yesterday Massachusetts got about 10" of snow and i finally got my chance. The low cost for this is what made me take a gamble seeing that my driveway is gravel rather than paved so i figured if i just Stay careful with the angle i push it with i should be fine. I wasn't so effective with my method however this little thing kicked up gravel like a champ with No issues at all. I know it's not recommended but i just wanted to share that its performance was worth every penny spent for those who are on the fence due to the material of their driveway. It works great! You do have to push it but it's not that hard to do. It was far better than shoveling. I highly recommend this to any curious buyers. A good friend of mine bought a $700 electric blower and it's auger cracked along the sidewalk. I'm not sure of what brand he hit but mine went through a more aggressive stress test and passed with flying colors and a few flying rocks which I'll be honest, was kind of fun. Five stars across the board! My neighbor was struggling with their big gas blower all morning as i was pushing through that snow no slower than if i were mowing the lawn with my grass stained new balances. This product increases your dad powers. Be the superior dad in the neighborhood and just buy it.
- KarenInfo for units that stop workingUPDATE: I just raised the star rating from 3 to 4. We've had a horrible winter here in Northern Michigan with constant snow fall, many times being dumped on with 10" or more of snow in a very short time. This little snow blower kept going and cleared my driveway every time. My husband ended up being hospitalized for a month, and it snowed pretty much daily during that time. Boy did I appreciate the fact that this little guy made it possible for me to get in and out of the driveway every day. It has it's shortcomings, but for the price, I'm very thankful I had it. I did have to remove the side panel and deal with frozen ice around the belt one additional time (read below), which is a pain. But still, thankful I had it.
Original post: I bought this in August to be prepared for winter. We didn't get much snow up until a few weeks ago. I was excited to try out my new little snow blower. First try, it did a pretty good job, although, it digs really deep, so if the snow isn't deep, it will dig into dirt. Second use, we had a good snowfall (about 7").. It did a pretty good job. I did my long driveway with it and was very pleased with the results. In fact, I got on here to write a glowing review, but held it to take pictures.. I realized there was another area I could have used it on, so I got it out, it started, but sounded weird and wasn't throwing snow. I turned it off to check it over. Couldn't find anything wrong, so I tried to start it again, but it was just dead.
I called the customer service number on the front of the manual, and after describing what happened to the rep, he suggested that the belt might be packed with snow and ice. He told me how to remove a side panel to see. He was right, it was indeed completely frozen with ice and snow. If you are standing at the back of the unit looking forward, the black panel on the left side of the machine is connected by 4 screws. If you remove them and pull off the panel, you can see the belts. Mine was completely frozen with a lot of ice. I carefully chipped what I could away and then pointed a heater towards it letting the rest of the snow melt. Once the ice was gone, I tried starting it and it started right up.
There are pros and cons to this. Amazon had offered to let me ship it back, minus a $21 restocking fee (which wasn't setting well with me since I'd only used it two times).. I really did not want to unassemble the machine and repack it in the box, let alone take it to the local UPS drop off since I am a 64 year old woman and getting that box into my vehicle would not be easy.. So, for that, I'm very glad I got it running again. However, I am concerned about the fact that this thing may get packed with ice and snow every time I use it, and I may have to repeatedly remove that panel and get rid of the ice. The rep suggested I bring the unit inside the house and let it warm up. I don't want a snow blower sitting in my house, let alone allowing snow/ice to melt away in the house. That isn't a practical option. Running a heater out in the garage to melt the ice and snow isn't a great option, either, as it just raises our electric bill. In the long run, it does a pretty good job, but with limitations. It's snowing right now and will be all night, so I'll get the chance to use it tomorrow morning. I'm hoping it doesn't end up packed with ice and snow again. - Morgan WrenHighly recommend!!I’ve used this a few times, but today as most of the country got hammered with snow and ice this thing was a beast!! Knowing it can’t handle deep snow I went out every few hours to keep up with the depth. It worked like a champ! I will be buying a backup battery as the only reason I had to stop was because the battery needed to be recharged!! Highly recommend!!
