The Kennedy Chronicles: The Golden Age of MTV Through Rose Colored Glasses

Top reviews from the United States

  • Thrill ride through the early 90s Mtv
This book is not for everyone.... I don't mean the non-Republicans. She talks about her love of the elephant, but does not throw her specific conservative views in the book. She instead talks about the people and things she loved and hated in her five year stint at Mtv. And she does it like everything she did at the studio; with may opinions and doesn't apologize for anything. Her stories can be convoluted and she often seems to talk in circles. But, they are funny! Her descriptions of all the people she meets and her relationships are described in such detail, the reader feels like they were transported back to 90s Mtv. So, this book is definitely written from a girl's viewpoint, and probably will be most enjoyed by women, but anyone who would like to relive this extraordinary time period will also enjoy the book.
  • Witty VJ Tell All
I read the recent MTV books (the history of MTV, the book the first VJs wrote) and, while I wasn't much into MTV in the 90s because I was listening to music and not watching it, I remember Kennedy. She was the Betty to Tabitha Soren's Veronica. The book had great reviews and I couldn't stop reading the sample on my kindle, so I bought it. About a third of the way through I remembered why Kennedy bugged me so much.
It's that kooky, forever-an- outsider attitude-be it her politics, her pj-wearing or her virginity-she must be different-that gets old fast. However, this attitude can also make her very relatable. She tells great stories about MTV (and yes, gives names). She then goes back to ask the person (Trent Reznor, Henry Rollins, Johnny Rzeznik etc) what they remembered about the time, which, surprise! usually took on more significance in her mind than in theirs. But-spoiler alert-that Goo Goo Dolls song "Name" is actually about her.
In the end, I wouldn't suggest this book to someone who found her annoying back in the day because it's all about her and, even years later, she's the same Kennedy. But she is full of witty comebacks (if she doesn't say so herself, and she does) and it's fun to hear the stories, especially because she puts it out there-she was in the right place at the right time.
  • Kennedy chronicles
I was never a big fan of kennedy when she was on mtv I liked her book a lot lots of tell all books are full of fake stuff people trying to be nice or classy that's not what kennedy did here she let go and gave her true opinion on everything her friendship with Trent Reznor the other vj at mtv Henry Rollins as well as fights with Courtney love fans and much more I didn't like the over description of a lot of stuff in the book she didn't need to go so over the top and tried to be funny way to much but other than that awesome book if your a fan of 90s pop culture or alternative music you will love this book
  • It has its moments...
Considering the amount of access she had to celebrities during her time on MTV, Kennedy does have a number of fun anecdotes to share. The downside is I didn't care for her personality the first time around, and seeing as it's her book, that personality comes through loud and clear (a ghost writer would have been spectacular). She's a little full of herself as she repeatedly declares her time on MTV as "The Golden Age." Bottom line, if you liked her back in the day, you'll love this book. If you're like me, you'll find that the stories about her life aren't enough on their own to hold your interest. For me the best parts were her observations of the people around her. Whenever she started running on about herself, I jumped ahead to the good stuff.
  • Well worth the read, whether you liked Kennedy or not!
Honestly, I hated Kennedy when she was on MTV. I saw her recently on Fox's Red Eye, where she told the story about Michael Jordan, so I decided to give the book a try. I thought the book was wonderful. She shares enough to make it feel like a juicy tell-all, but not so much that you're left feeling dirty and in need of a Clorox bath, or that the book is an attempt get back at people who've done her wrong. With personal memoirs, there's a very fine line between sharing enough and sharing too much, and I think Kennedy strikes the perfect balance.

This book is a quick, easy, fun read - well written and left me wanting more!
  • Hilarious
Kennedy is a true wordsmith, I laughed out loud many times, as I have the same 12 year old sense of humor. This also has some great history of MTV's hey day, so many events I remember, so many great shows, I enjoyed Alternative Nation and 120 Minutes. And Kennedy's irreverence was as funny then as it is now. Thank you for the laughs! Check it out.
  • Thanks for the memories back!! ":)
This book is terrific! It is well-written, funny and perceptive in it's entirety! I am so happy to know that there are other highly creative, quirky, silly, free-thinking, open-minded conservatives out there like me! This book is such a great romp back in time through the '90's and MTV's last decade as an actual MUSIC video channel! Hooray Kennedy...you made me laugh out loud, say "OMG" more than once and truly entertained me with your book!! "The Kennedy Chronicles" is such fun...
