A captivating and original story, with probably the best audiobook I’ve heard this year.
Unhinged is book one in a 4 part series, which final book is going to be released in October of 0225. It’s a dark why choose romance that follows a girl named Avery with an extremely dark and traumatic backstory, but who is ultimately a victim of circumstance, and not a bad person.
Avery has been convicted of murdering her father, a incident which also has left her emotionally and mentally scared. Due to her history of abuse she was offered a a spot at Lilydale Foundation Center instead prison. Lilydale is rehabilitation center that takes in young adults to make them functioning member of society, or as Avery put it, it “is a glorified prison and asylum for the deranged with good alibis”.
I went into this book completely blind, and was pleasantly surprised that it was such good story. It has a very unique storyline, that’s I’ve never really seen done in this genre, and it was done extremely well. It has lot of twists and turns, and all of the male main characters are extremely distinctive. Which really helps, because why choose books sometimes can be confusing, especially when each character doesn’t stand out in their own. Sometimes I’ll be reading a why choose and get confused about who’s who, but I didn’t have that happen at all in this book.
This book is a slow burn, which I don’t typically enjoy, but I do believe the pace was necessary for the character development. I am pretty sure this series will get increasingly more spicy as it continues. Some of the other tropes include morally grey MMC’s, hurt/comfort, enemies to lovers, touch her and die, and love triangle.
Grey and Theo are top tier book boyfriend material, and I’m pretty interested in learning how Damon is going to be redeemed in the upcoming books. The book ends on a pretty heartbreaking cliffhanger, but I’m excited to continue and see how this plays out.
The audiobook is absolutely incredible. It’s narrated in multiple POV, with a cast that is top tier. All of the audiobook narrators are phenomenal on their own. Collectively they create a performance that will absolutely enthrall even the newest to audiobooks, or dark romance. It maybe the best audiobook performance I’ve listen to in 2025. - Britney ThomasA why choose in an asylum?! *Perfection*This is the first book in this series. I truly enjoyed it! I love Avery and the tension between Theo and Grey! So many secrets left to be told. I think the book ended on the perfect cliffhanger to set up for book two! The audiobook is AMAZING! Strongly suggest reading the book WHILE listening to it ☺️

I really wish that was said in the blurb for this book. I don't like when books end on a cliff or it isn't stated that it can't be read as a standalone.
The story is good and entertaining, I liked the characters. But the thing that drove me nuts was that I didn't realize I was getting sucked i to a multiple book series that I needed to finish all the way through to get the entire story.
The narrators on this are amazing!! I loved that everyone main character has their own voice. You hear a lot from Corvin King in this one and I loved that. I felt like all the characters had the right narrator to their personality of the story.
I like when authors give you multiple narrators to a story with multiple POVs. - Dorisa BDark, Emotional, and Impossible to Put DownThis series pulled me in from the very first book and held my attention all the way through. The writing is engaging, the pacing is strong, and the emotional depth made it easy to become invested in the characters and their journey across all four books. Each installment builds on the last, raising the stakes and keeping the story compelling.
I appreciated the balance of darker themes, romance, and character development, as well as how the connections between the characters evolved throughout the series. ♡This is my first Steph Macca read & it will definitely not be my last! The second I heard the trailer for this book I counted down the days for its release! Every one of these narrators are absolute perfection & really brought this unhinged dark why choose romance to life!!
Unhinged was everything my dark why choose loving heart could have wanted! It had my attention from page one & by the end I was on the edge of my seat praying for more! I can not wait to hear what Book 2 has in store for us.♡

Love the mfc, Avery, and the growing bond between her, Theo and Grey, two of the three mmc's! There's so much mystery, so many secrets yet to be revealed about the facility they're in, and the twist and turns absolutely leave you desperate to find out the answers and what comes next. This was one roller coaster of a ride, one I never wanna get off of. I know I'm gonna be blown away when all comes to light!
I fully believe the ending, though it was a cliffhanger, could not have been more perfect, setting the stage for book two! This, without question, is one series for the ages and is a definite must read! I would also go as far as saying that it's one of my top five all-time faves. So. Unbelievably. Good!!! This the beginning of the series and i couldn't wait to dive in. The plot was good it was original I thought. The realness and the logic of the characters made it even easier for me to relate. Not to mention I love the continued theme of informed consent on your personal info. (That may have been a little too deep but…) On my re-read and re listen list! Next one please!
