- JeffhIncredible HardwareI have had the HP ProLiant DL360 G7 server for quite a while now. I am amazed at how much technology is provided for the price. These things are decked out. I am running ESXi and have a number of virtual Ubuntu servers running. This machine runs great. Is it the fastest thing out there? No. But it is still a great machine. If you want to learn how to install and manage ESXi this is a great machine to do so on.
My machine came exactly as advertised with the exception of the hard drive configuration. Mine came with 4 300 GB SAS drives rather than the 8 120 GB SAS drives as advertised. I am actually thrilled that it came configured with hard drives this way. Now I have 4 slots where I can add more SAS drives if needed. And 300 GB drives are easier to work with than the smaller drives. I set mine up using RAID 10.
Pulling the cover the machine looks brand new. Very clean.
This machine has all of the add ons that would have cost more in upgrades when purchased new.
Beware these things put out a lot of heat. So you will need a cool place to run it. Also the machine is pretty quiet configured using the Balance power option. Put it on the Performance mode and it gets pretty noisy.
If you have ever wanted a blade server you will not go wrong getting one of these. They are decked out with all of the bells and whistles. - JDon’t think, Just buy! This thing is a beast, old, but surely a workhorse. You can easily upgrade these servers with a higher clocked “x5600” Xeon CPU, (I recommend the x5690)
From what I’ve used it for a dedicated gaming server, this thing has no problem keeping up with my workloads that I’ve been throwing at it, I can easily host multiple game servers on this while I leave it at idle and do other tasks as well.
I’m currently VERY happy with mine, saw the reviews and decided screw it, bought it, and now am in the process of further upgrades. And I’m running Windows 10 pro on it, fully stable.
The only CONS I can think of is the fans (They’re LOUD) but it’s a server so it’s to be expected. And also bootup and shutdown can be quite slow, but that’s because it has to go through sensor calibration and what not, so even that isn’t an issue. - Wildmaster84Surprisingly really good! When i first seen the listing i figured it was a scam, but after receiving the server within 2 days and no issues whatsoever, i am truly amazed how great this product it! The only thing i complain about is instead of getting 8 HHD, i recived 2 900G HHD. Still not complaining about it because i still got the storage i was hoping for, but could have atlease added the HDD trays even if they had no HHD in them, would have saved a bit of money. :D
- Luke P. CainGreat BuyThese things are old. I'm not sure how old, but probably at least 10 years. I've had a G5 for a year or so, and decided that for the money I'd add a G7. It came with windows 2012 Server loaded, but no password, and I couldn't get it to boot Windows 2019 Server from a thumb drive (bad files on thumb drive, I think), so I ended up installing Windows 2016 Server from an external DVD-ROM. Works great. This thing is so clean you could eat out of it. I complained at first because it was advertised a coming with 8 146GB drives, but mine only had 4 drives installed. The vendor explained that I had gotten 4 300GB drives, giving me the same storage, and room for expansion. That makes sense to me. I promptly bought 6 more 300GB drives (1 spare, and 1 to replace a drive that might be flaky) from a low price of $12.99 to a high price of $15.99. I bought them two at a time so that is the reason for different prices. I've worked around computers all of my life, and I'm still amazed at $150 servers and $13 hard drives.
One caveat: the installed drives were set up as RAID 0, and I didn't pay attention to that when I installed the operating system. With these old drives (or with new ones as well), RAID 0 gives you a boost in read/write speed but absolutely no redundancy. I installed my new drives as RAID 0+1, but I need to reinstall the operating system if I go back and change the drives the server came with.
Bottom line is that my experience has been A+, and these are fun servers if you are learning, and I wouldn't hesitate using them in a small business. - John BNeeded work to get it stable.Pictures shows 750W power supplies, came with 460W. I tested with Windows Server 2022 and RedHat EL 9.1 and in both the server would randomly shutdown. Red health indicator and the popup diag chart would show the PSUs every time. I reseated the PSUs to see if that would help, it didn't. I ended up buying a couple of 750W PSUs and the problem as not occurred since installing them.
- Bill AndersonGreat server for the priceIt works great
- Zach RossLocked BiosThis Is A Review Of The Item Itself And Not The Company
I purchased this server as a way to run ark and Minecraft game servers off of and for that the configuration was great it had the drives needed to run a RAID 10 array and still have enough to hold the files for my 5 relatively small game servers the ram held up fine and I didn't seem to have any issues with CPU bottlenecking. But here is where the problems started when I opened task manager to check the CPUs I am met with a screen that tells me the CPUs are running at 0% usage with a 0.20 GHz clock I then decided to test and see if for some reason my tasks were just not touching the CPUs enough to do anything and ran a stress test the whole time the test was running the CPUs did not move at all. When I googled the issue for the low clock speeds with 0% usage I was led to a fix in the BIOS but when booting the system I could not use the keyboard to boot into the BIOS menu or any other menus after trying 6 keyboards I determined that it was the server.
The seller was helpful in starting a return and has provided a shipping label. As mentioned in the beginning this is a review of the product only and not the seller. This would appear to have been an issue that is known with these systems running the P68 BIOS that I did not know about prior to buying the server.
