- Booginas"Somewhere in Time" --- or "SomeWHEN in Time"??If I was a crier, I would have cried watching this movie. I love how they integrated the scientific & metaphysical subjects of time travel & reincarnation without being overbearing with it. The acting was phenomenal. This is the only thing I've seen Jane Seymour act in outside of "Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman" and that was AGES ago when I was a teenager. It is also the only thing I ever saw Christopher Reeve act in aside from the original Superman franchise, & that was also ages ago. I never knew how talented or strikingly beautiful either of them was 'til now. The only thing that bothers me --- more like consternates me more than irritates me --- is trying to figure out is which snake is eating the other (reference the Oren charm from "The Neverending Story" movie)?? They both have their tail in the other's mouth! Meaning, OK . . . without giving the plot away, I can't determine if Christopher Reeve's character --- "Richard" --- was born in the late 1800s & grew to be an adult by the time the 1921 came around or if he's initially from the 80s where the movie intially begins and just went BACK in time to be with Jane Seymour's character Elise just because she gave him the watch that got his curiosity going. Logic would deem that he would have had to have been from Elise's time period orginally for her to have remembered him as an old woman, but when he came to her when she was a young woman, she didn't know who he was and he didn't even know the customs of that earlier time. Which WOULD make sense if he had been reincarnated in the late 20th century and went back to 1921. But that doesn't make sense either, cuz when he's jettisoned back into the 80s, it's not because he died, but because he knocked himself out of the trance that helped him to go back in time in the first place. And the only way reincarnation can happen (that we know of) is that you have to DIE in order to be reborn, and he didn't die when he left Elise. It just seems like a loop with no ending or beginning.
Also, it raises interesting new suppositions about the NATURE, or METHOD of time travel. When most people think of time travel, they tend to think that you need an external machine to facilitate the travel. But in this film, it is proposed that that YOU are the machine and all you need is complete belief that it is possible & total faith that you ALREADY are in whatever period you wish to be in. This method of travel, then calls one to question the nature of reality altogether because when Richard was shunted out of the past. back into his own/present time, he body apparently had never left the present, yet he was also physically in the past with Elise --- clearly as they were able to touch one another. This is exactly what happens when we dream. Our bodies remain in bed, yet while we "dream" (or literally live an alternate life, perhaps?) we totally believe we are somewhere else physically, & experience physical & emotional sensations just as we would in "waking" life in the present. So who's to say that while we are awake in the so-called "Present," that we aren't really asleep in what we call the dream realm, dreaming our so-called "Present"? It could go either way. So how do you know what life is the dream, and which is the reality. It definitely falls in line with the becoming ever-more-popular theory that time is not linear, but a loop and everything is happening at once --- the past, present, AND future. I can just understand in a conceptual way, but fully understanding it hurts by brain. But that's the only way to explain this movie, AND to explain our own supposed reality and dreams. What makes it so hard (for me anyway) to believe that dreams are actual realities is the fact that my dreams are never continuous, i.e., I don't pick up tonight where my dream last night left off. But it what I call my waking reality, when I awake from my dream every morning, I can recall what I did the previous day before I went to sleep and had the dream. And the day before that. There's a sense of verifiable continuity that not only myself, but those I know can confirm. But since my dreams are always crazy and very nonsensical and non-continuous, it seems like there's no way they could be real or legitimate. Who knew a love story could raise such confounding questions. Anyway . . . great movie!! - MaryA classic romanceWho has never seen a picture of a person from the past and been fascinated with them and wish you could have known them? That makes this movie a real treat as it plays on that theme and then some. Every woman wants to be loved like Richard loves Elise. The music, scenery, costumes....it's all so beautiful. It's a classic in my book. It's clean and were it not for one scene in which they go to bed, it would be completely family friendly (not that kids would be interested in this type movie but still). And that is how you make a sex scene, as they did. You infer, you know it happened, but we saw nothing. I hate all the language and nudity in today's movies. This is far better.
- Kindle CustomerWorth watchingEnjoyed this movie. Christopher reeves part was very good. Beautiful story.
- Bill BelcheeWonderful time travel romanceSweet love story with beautiful music and a wonderful tribute to Jack Finney, author of Time and Again.
- Khristine JacksonThe fantasy of love that come's.I saw this on cable television more than 15 years ago.... I was in the mood for "Romance" and boy am I happy that I did treat myself . This film really leave's a whole in your heart, in part to the fact that actor Christopher Reeves is no longer among us or his late widow. Such a tall man ..with serious good looks and charm to boot. Yes we all tend to associate him with the role that made him famous ...around the globe. What people don't understand is or was he had that chemistry. That certain actor's need to visually seduce an audience... he obviously enjoyed this role. If he didn't .. we as his viewers. Wouldn't pay to see this film.. Funny thing when the movie came out..it wasn't successful. Years later when it aired on television and cable it grabbed a following.. The costumes, location, the cast, script ,music and all involved did a fantastic job... Where ever you are Christopher Reeve .... We miss you .. RIP
- BipleyIt took a bit of time for me to get into the movie, but once it got going...It was pretty good. Odd, but a good watch.
- Julie M.Ageless.......Everything about this movie is good. Watch it. You won't be sorry. I saw it when I was 12 and it's on my top 10 ever since. The movie by which I judge romance movies.
