I remember the exact moment I realized why thoughtful travel planning matters.

I was sitting in a small restaurant overseas with my Rick Steves guidebook open on the table. The restaurant was lovely—exactly the kind of place you hope to stumble upon while traveling. Great food, charming atmosphere, full of character.

But as I looked around the room, I noticed something.

Nearly every table had the same guidebook sitting on it.

    Page corners folded.
    Highlighter marks.
Americans everywhere who had clearly followed the exact same recommendation.

The restaurant itself was wonderful. But the experience wasn’t authentic anymore—it was simply popular.

And that moment stuck with me.

It made me start wondering: how do you actually find the places locals love?
Not the ones that appear in every guidebook or travel list—but the ones that feel real.

That curiosity eventually led me into this career.

Because the truth is, when everyone follows the same books, blogs, or algorithms, travel becomes predictable. Entire cities funnel visitors into the same handful of places, and the authenticity people are searching for slowly disappears.

The most meaningful travel experiences usually exist just outside those pages.

They come from local relationships, from people who live there, and from thoughtful planning that looks beyond the obvious.

That’s the part of travel I care about. — but if you’re good with going to popular local places Rick Steve’s books are the best
