- LottieFun to readAn enjoyable read. A true story about a man in his relationship with a penguin very amusing and a fun read whichintroduced me to Argentina and South America and their culture.
- Stanley Craig TylerThe Penguin Lessons reviewA great book. Adds a lot that was not in the movie! Read the book first. It’s the true story as told by the young man who had the penguin. It’s not “based on a true story” as the movie version is although it was a good movie.
- Charlie815Huge charm from a diminutive soulIf you are an animal lover, a must read. Heartwarming true story, once again proving the strong bond we as humans have with
our fellow inhabitants on the place we call Earth. I think as humans we somehow feel superior and in control of who we pick as our
"pets", "I want a chocolate lab, or a gray cockatoo" and yet I find that they more often pick you, at least that has been my experience,
and this is a case in point. It also poignantly points out the damage humans inflict everyday on our precarious relationship with our
environment. It would have been a 5 star for me, but to be fair the writing rambles a bit at times, that said, it is his first book and
certainly told from the heart. - maryVery Special bookAbsolutely delightful story of a man rescuing a penguin and how his life, and those around him, are forever changed by little Juan Salvador.
- M.Rothwhat a great story!A guy and a penguin…who would have thought? I recommend this story to animal lovers and others alike. It’s a story not soon to be forgotten
- Reader LadyHeartwarming and lovable taleOne of the most delightful books I've read in a long time. Such a heartwarming tale of friendship between Tom and the penquin. Great vacation book!
- Sherrie MirandaGreat movie. Mediocre book.Loved the movie. The book, not so much.
For whatever reason, the author completely avoids the politics of the time period.
As a political activist, that was an important part of the story.
For some reason, he felt he should focus completely on the penguin. I’m glad they made the movie showing the time period the story took place. They were tough times & the world should know just how tough they are. Especially considering they seemed to have reversed course and are back in those dark days.
We wouldn’t have the movie without the book. For that I do appreciate his effort. - Beth CzAn unusual adventureFirst, the writing quality was excellent. Descriptions were easily understood and I imagined being with Juan Salvado watching the adventure unfold. I would recommend this book to anyone who cares about wildlife in need.
