- S. HowtonThis is a fantastic book by an amazing author! This isn’t one of those dry and self-aggrandizing works! The stories are interesting, humorous and witty, as well as terrifying and sad!
I had the honor of meeting the author and talking with him for hours about his life and work; he told the stories like I would have had they happened to me. Because of that, I could really connect to the story and feel of the event as it unfolds!
Have a drink handy, because you’ll feel the dry dust in your throat and the blazing sun on your head, as you cautiously look for the client’s gut shot lion…in the Long Grass. - ZZSTAKEIf you like to hunt, you'll like this book....The stories in the this book make it a great read and although I wouldn't personally hunt an animal just to put its head on my wall, this was a different time in Africa and so I don't hold it against the author for making a living this way. Peter Capstick is a great writer for sure, and my only complaint would be that he spends too much time repeatedly reminding the reader how dangerous these animals are. After awhile it's like, okay, we get it, a wounded lion or elephant will kill you if you give it a chance. However, given that Capstick claims to have culled over 700 Pachyderms and never received a scratch, how dangerous can they be when you're carrying a high-powered rifle? Other than, though, it's a great read and some of the stories will have you on the edge of your seat.
If you're interested in visiting Africa in the late 1800's to early 1900's I would also recommend The Man-eaters of Tsavo. - R. D. Nelsongreat bookI really like his writing style. Serious yet funny at the same time. He brings the African bush to life. I intend to read all'of his books. 5+ stars!!
