- General CustomerPerfect for a European Vacation with iPhones! This was the best thing I bought before we left for Europe!! Our U.S. cell provider does not offer any type of cellular service option for traveling in Europe. So, I had been considering a burner phone when I discovered this Orange European SIM card. It was the perfect solution. This SIM card will only work in an unlocked phone, in Europe. Because my husband and I both own our iPhones, we did the following BEFORE we left for Europe: (1.) had his iPhone unlocked, (2.) turned on his Roaming (3.) turned on his Personal Hot Spot, and (4.) opened the Orange SIM card package only for the purpose of writing down the new unique European phone number associated with this SIM card. We did NOT install the Orange SIM card until we were in Europe. Then we powered his phone off until we landed in France. Once we landed, we installed the Orange SIM card and carefully placed his original SIM in the package for reuse when we returned to the U.S. In France, we powered up his phone and “Voila” - it literally worked immediately. Because Personal Hotspot was turned on, I could tether my phone to his and all of my services (cellular, text, WiFi, apps) worked as long as I was in close proximity to his phone. This allowed us to use my phone for SIRI and Maps for walking or driving directions in Spain, France and Italy. It was just like being at home with SIRI telling us where to turn and how far to walk to reach any of the iconic destinations or addresses we wanted. It literally would not have been possible to do everything without this SIM card. Orange SIM service is available for 14 days without registering or buying any additional cellular service. After 14 days, if you’re still in Europe, you will need to buy Orange cellular service, which can be done for small intervals of time. When we left Europe, we powered off his iPhone. When we landed in the U.S., we installed his original SIM and everything is working perfectly again on our regular cell service. The Orange SIM card was the EXACT solution I needed in advance for peace of mind, and absolutely invaluable for SIRI’s information. Highly, highly recommend!!! I never needed their tech support, so I have no experience with that aspect. However, we did see a lot of Orange cellular stores all over Europe, so I imagine they would have helped us, if it had been needed.
- M. McKnightUsed to work great, now this service is a big failI've purchased several of these cards for past travel in Europe. They were always easy to use and we had few problems. After this latest trip, I'm done. Service is lackluster and everything is a pain in the butt, when you just want to be concentrating on your vacation. From registering to topping up, nothing works as it is supposed to and the website just throws errors. Support has no idea how to fix it. Just avoid...
- Kristen DeLucoEasy setup - covers multiple countriesWorked great. Had a hiccup when we found out our phones were locked. (On an iPhone - go to settings >general>about scroll down to character lock - it should say no SIM restrictions) My daughter had an unlocked iphone on the same carrier - so this was a surprise to us. But once we got that fixed with our carrier - we had no issues at all with the sim card. just popped it in and changed the network to 3 when we were in Scotland and Vodaphone IE in Ireland. We were travelling for only 2 weeks -so no other set up was needed. I had purchased a Vodaphone UK card for my daughter when she left for her junior year abroad - set up was more steps, only worked in the UK and she couldn't swap networks to get better coverage like I could when we travelled to more remote places.
- Karen BrolleyGreat (Temporary) International Cell Service PlanWhy did you pick this product vs others?:
This is a great option if you either don't have cell service internationally with you cell plan or don't want to pay the added fees. I used this over in Switzerland last year and just purchased again for an upcoming Croatia trip. The only issue I had is sometimes with US numbers I got an "undelivered" number even though the recipients were getting my texts. - Colby JenkinsImportant info for cruise ship users & other buyersMy wife went on a cruise and I bought this card for her to be able to stay in touch without paying the high International roaming rates. We were very pleased with the product and the service. I knew that she would never use 30GB of data but the texts and minutes to stay in touch with home made this an extremely fine bargain. Take note that SMS messages are included but MMS (for pictures) is not.
She used it an unlocked iPhone. She did not even know what a sim card was when we began, but after a few practice sessions at the kitchen table using my Sim and hers she learned how. When she got to London, she managed to remove her US Sim and insert the Orange Sim AFTER she arrived in London. It worked fine until she got on the cruise ship.
Here is the important info for cruisers. If your ship uses your phone as your room medallion and requires your phone to be in airplane mode to work (as Princess does) then when you get back on land or in port you must turn off airplane mode for the phone to work with the Orange Sim. This may explain why some users never got it to work. In port it helps to be on an open deck.
The other thing is if your phone uses an eSim you may wish to convert to a physical Sim before you leave the US. That is what we did. Your provider may do this for free or charge a couple of bucks. Doing this means there will only be one Sim in your phone at a time and no way for you to mess up.
One other thing we did was to create new contacts in my phone and hers that contained the country exit codes, Country codes, area codes and phone numbers. This saved a lot of potential confusion.
For calls to France the exit code for the US is 011 and the country code for France is 33
For calls to the US The exit code for France is 001 and the US country code is 001.
Your French phone number will be printed on the Sim card instructions. The first 0 is ignored when dialing and your French area code and number will begin with a 6.
Bottom line is that if you have an unlocked phone and can swap the Sims you can stay in touch with home for a lot less money than the big boys charge for international roaming.
