The batteries are included. There are two main sets of motion that one can achieve by toggling the switch on the battery pack to either side, and then pressing the heart button on the back of the animal.
The watermelon slice seems to be an extra piece (which unfortunately I lost), and inserting it has no effect on movement (although there is a set routine that implies that the slice was used).
