While there are some biopic films that have done wonders for a artist's legacy like Bohemian Rhapsody did for Queen & others that were just fantasy that did not portray the art well, such as the fantasy Elton John biopic, Rocketman. But with the word of mouth around the late Michael Jackson's legacy in a new biopic called Michael. I was unsure on how it would work around the King Of Pop's immortal legacy. But in the end, it only covers half of his solo journey & does not cover the other side like his portrayal. Will that make around hard core Michael Jackson fan go moonwalk to buy this? Well, mostly a no in the end.
The Michael Jackson biopic soundtrack only covers half of Michael Jackson's greatest era of pop, but does include more to make people shine. For those that just discovered Michael Jackson because of the impact of his death in 2009, it also draws some essence's away that does not do justice enough to that legacy. While it does a good job covering sides of his legacy, but not completely the whole nine yards. It is nowhere as defiant as was the case with the 2004 Ray Charles biopic Ray's soundtrack at heart, but tries to focus on Michael Jackson to the zenith of his 80's era well. You do get elements from Michael in several hats from The Jackson 5 & Michael's trifecta albums with Quincy Jones: Off The Wall, Bad & Thriller. But not enough to satisfy the hard core Michael Jackson fans. There are several greats here like Human Nature, the definitive Beat It & Billie Jean, as well as several of the Jackson 5 era songs like I'll Be There & Ben. But that remains mostly it. You do not have elements for the hard core Michael Jackson fans of eras like Got To Be There from his Motown era, Enjoy Yourself from The 70's era The Jacksons or other Michael Jackson greats like the definitive Man In The Mirror, I Just Can't Stop Loving You or Dirty Diana. It feels like a missed opportunity to be a companion soundtrack for a legend's immortal work of art. Also, the fact the soundtrack does not include music from the fallout era of the 90's with Dangerous, History: Past, Present & Future Book 1 or the 2001 flawed, Invincible. It cuts off at a point where you only want to celebrate the zenith of a artist, and at the point where you'd only stay definitive to a artist at the height of their immortality.
If you're new to Michael Jackson's music & are planning on seeing the biopic, Michael, I cannot recommend the soundtrack to the Michael Jackson biopic. If you're a hard core Michael Jackson fan, you're better off staying with other Michael Jackson greatest hits compilations like 2005's Essential Michael Jackson or if you're just discovering Michael Jackson's legacy for the first time, the 2009 This Is It Michael Jackson documentary soundtrack is a absolutely better fit for library. I could only recommend this soundtrack for any Michael Jackson fan for anyone that never heard a Michael Jackson song before as a simple sampler, but not any part of the main course & dessert in the end.
