I ordered a different model at first and it did not come with the micro sd card feature. Brother does not advertise well and their instructions are terrible. I look at a lot of websites to see what people who have bought the product are saying. The instruction did not say to fast press the on/off button to turn it on and did not say you have to press and hold the on/off button for 6 seconds and then let go to turn it off. Almost returned it because the lights were flashing and slow to respond when turning on and off. After figuring out that on and off procedure, the scanner worked flawlessly. I like the double sided scan feature and you do not need a computer if you are saving to the SD card. I bought this brand and model because on a government computer, you cannot just hook up any hardware and put in any software without getting approval from the IT department which usually do not allow anything they do not know about.
You would think being part of the largest organization in the State that you would have the best of everything. The exact opposite is true. I have antique hardware and am using Microsoft 2013 which was a recent upgrade from Microsoft 2003. The lazerjet printer looks like it belongs in a museum.
This scanner solved my problem. It plugs in and becomes an external drive. It scans 14 pages in 40 seconds or less. It can scan in the jpeg or pdf format. It takes up very little space on your desk and is very quiet. You can scan and save through Wi Fi, SD card, or USB cable. The utilities software is alright, not the greatest and like all other brands, they allow you a sample of the PDF software but want you to buy the full version. They make like it comes with the full version of the software but then it begs you to buy it.
The only thing is that you cannot scan a page in a book. The page you are scanning has to pass through the scanner, unlike a scanner bed which will allow you to scan an open book. Not unless you rip out the page and pass it through the scanner. I use this scanner everyday at work and it is holding up very well.
Legal documents, maps, timesheets, can be scanned and sent through your computer saving you a trip from your remote office to your main office saving you time, money, and gas. Especially with the price of gas today, you will be happy you purchased this scanner. Do not forget to buy the hard case to protect your scanner. I take my scanner where ever I go.

I bought this because I don't scan often and would rather not connect a special USB cable for power and data. The cable that comes with it is a USB A to your laptop. That's common for scanners. I have a Surface Studio which only has USB C connections.

For scanning to your mobile device. You connect to the scanner's wi-fi. They call this "Direct Wi-Fi". The password is on the bottom of the device is complex. That's ok as your phone will remember it the next time. You also download their App. It all works fine, but I'm really only interested using this with my laptop.

On my laptop, I really don't want to get off my wi-fi and switch to the scanner's wi-fi for a scan, and then switch back. Searching Brother's online support, I learned I could reconfigure the scanner to connect to my wi-fi network. The process is clear enough, but you do need to be a bit on the tech side. Basically, you connect first to the scanner's wi-fi. Then you HTTP to a special URL. Enter an admin password found on the bottom of the device. You are not prompted for it. You just enter it in a tiny box on the top left. After that you'll find a whole menu of options to configure. One of them is wireless network.

In the end, I have exactly what I wanted. I just power up the scanner. No cables. Load the Brother app on my laptop. Select the scanner. And go.

I have to make sure I don't lose the USB cable that came with it. It seems that's the only way to charge it. I tried charging it with just a micro USB which fits, but that didn't charge it.

Update December 2022:
Added 2 stars to my original review. Brother iPrint Scan has been updated and I think Brother has updated the software and firmware to the extent that this thing works much better than it used to. I was using Adobe Acrobat Pro to create PDFs which is most of my scans. Recently Adobe began to crash any time I clicked File > Create PDF> From Scanner, and my skull nearly exploded. This caused me to just open iPrint scan and see what I could do and I found it to work quite well. There is definitely a learning curve and you need some tech skills, but you can setup one touch scan shortcuts in iPrint Scan to do all the various types of scans you want to use frequently. Example: I like to scan my receipts from certain stores where I shop frequently so I can throw away the original and still have it in my phone in case I need to return something. I setup a "Workflow" in iPrint Scan to scan the receipt no matter how long it is (you have to choose "long paper narrow width" as the document size or the scanner will "jam" after about 14 inches). I give it a file location and setup the default file name to start with the store name and then enter the date and time of the scan as the rest of the file name. Choose to make it a "One Touch Workflow". Then when I get home from that store I can pop the receipt on the scanner, tap the shortcut named "xyz store receipts" and it scans in about 1 second and files itself in the correct folder.

From my original review:
The good:
Scans quickly
Scans both sides of the page at one time. No flipping the page over and putting it back in
Can scan really long receipts
Can scan really small things like business cards
Can scan wirelessly
Small footprint. Doesn't take up much space.
Can setup limitless "workflows" that are shortcuts with specific scan settings saved for the types of scans you do frequently. Huge time saver.

The bad:
Setup was a nightmare. I used to work in IT. I am very tech savvy. This is a nightmare to install and setup for the the various uses. You don't use one software for everything. Do yourself a favor and try to stick with Brother iPrint Scan. I have way less trouble if I just use that. There is a mobile app version I'm using on my phone with the wireless scanning features and that's going pretty well.
Learning curve for the various apps and setup you need to use all the features is big. The average user will struggle to figure it out. Get help from someone tech savvy if you're not.
The app for scanning business cards is JUNK! If you were buying this to help create a CRM out of all your business cards, don't use that app. I haven't found one I like yet. I will update if I do.
Jams when it isn't jammed!! It constantly thinks it has a paper jam, even when it doesn't--mostly when it doesn't. If you load a page and pull it back out, the machine thinks it's jammed and you have to clear it before you can continue.
About clearing jams: You have to lift up the entire top portion of the scanner, not just the white ADF part that says Brother on it. It's black, about a half inch thick, and exposes the scanning mechanisms. That's what clears the jam warning without turning it off and unplugging it.

I am making this work but it took a lot of time and patience to get it to where I need it to be to eliminate all of the paper from my life that was stressing me out. I finally have it mostly working for me and I'm happier with it. Just know that it is a little advanced.
