5.0 out of 5 stars Works on a Windows 8.1 Computer upgraded to Windows 10

This DVD actually brought a dead computer back to life. If you have a computer that is a brick and bought right at the time that Windows 10 was being rolled out you will probably need unless you made a recovery DVD versus flash drive this maybe the only thing that will get you back up and running. In any case if you upgraded your recovery material will bring your computer back to in my case 8.1 (At least that what I read on HP's website). Since I didn't want to to this and luckily was fully backed up I wanted to replace the dead HD with an SSD and do a fresh install.

Since it was a family computer I am not sure how the Hard Drive started to crash and didn't trust Windows Defender. We wanted the new drive to be "fresh" so wanted to start totally fresh. So my first thought was buy the flash drive since that is my typical recovery media for our computers. Unfortunately it did not work double checking the bios to allow USB boot.. Not sure why and maybe it was due to the 8.1 to 10 OS upgrade. Anyhow as much as I changed and played with the Bios I could always hear the DVD drive wanting to boot. I thought got nothing to really lose and reviews mentioned it worked in this capacity but not sure about the OS upgrades. Bought this stuck in the drive and it started right up. My first attempt to get the HD to become smart did fail (it happens at the very end) because I picked upgrade choice and I had nothing to upgrade. Instead you want to pick new install. I believe the license for windows is buried in the bios and new install finds that license automatically. After that it was pretty straightforwards and relatively quick to install.

In summary, this DVD was all i needed to get back up and running. It was so simple to bring a totally dead PC back to life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Any operating instructions would help. Worthless unless you have a large external HD.

When I finally figured out how to get it started on my puny little HP computer, the repair software could not find the identifying number that is supposed to be in the HP. computer's onboard memory. It's a new computer from a reputable computer manufacturer, so the repair software ought to have been able to find it. I tried several times to get the software on the DVD to run, and somehow I muddled through. I have no idea what made the difference.

The software wanted to download and install updates. The HP had wanted to do this too, but its mere 32 GB of memory was not enough. If I recall correctly, 3 or 4 GB of free memory was required, When I said, "no," it looked for them all anyway. Then it said "we're getting a few things ready. It again offered to check for updates,. Then it checked for updates. It insisted on installing updates. I did to have sufficient memory on the external HD for making the upgrade. So I had to quit.

The computer came with 32 GB of memory. I had a new HD with 160 GB of memory on it, just received from Amazon. It should have been enough to permit the restore program to work, but several tries to download information failed. I just tried to verify the size of the new HD it says it has only a34 GB of memory, Something has evidently happened to this external HD, I did not try to reinstall the system on the HP until I received the repair disk.

There was a little slip of paper packed with the disk that said "contact us if you have troubles," but not only was there no phone or email address there wasn't even a company name anywhere in what was sent to me.

Ironically, in all the google searching I did after failing to get anywhere with the repair disk, I found a site that gives simple instructions for recovering the system with just a few lines of code typed into the computer's command console.

It's clear that this software works well for some people. I can only evaluate its usefulness for me as the owner of an underpowered Windows 10 pc.

I upgraded to Windows 10 about 2 years ago when Mircosoft rolled out free upgrades from Windows 7. This method meant I wouldn't have a disk or key code. Being somewhat tech-savvy, I didn't sweat this. Figured I could fix most minor issues myself. Well, last week my computer crashed somehow. The only solutions I could find -save for wiping the computer completely- required a boot disk. I saw this product, and thought it couldn't hurt to try. Within a matter of minutes, I was back up and running, with everything intact. It was as if nothing had happened. Very relieved, and happy I bought this disk. However, I DO recommend contacting the seller prior to ordering to make sure this disk is right for you. Correspondence and delivery was very swift, and the customer service was very, very good.

I had the orange stripe screen on reboot and had wanted to recover without restarting from scratch. I wasn't able to recover using the recovery cd/tool and there was no indication of how to contact their tech support. I had to recover back to the initial install software (windows 7) on the PC that was about 6 years past. All data lost on that recovery. I came up on windows 7, but could not accomplish anything on the internet (i.e. downloading windows10) because the operating system was so old. This is where the recovery cd/tool was useful. I was now able to use it to reinstall windows 10. Once on windows 10 I could down load patches and get to a current supported system.
