5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected

I am not a huge mackerel fan. I lived in So. Fla., about a mile from the beach, from 1957 until last year. Between fishing on the Pompano Pier as a youngster in the 60's, working on boats at Hillsboro Inlet in the 70's, and owning my own boats after college, I have caught more mackerel than most people, trust me.
Spanish and Cero were ok fried, King Mackerel (Kingfish) I never cared for. We used to catch so many off the coast we actually referred to them as sewer trout...because we always seemed to catch a few around the offshore treated sewage outlet. Anyway.....
These were on a very good sale so I tried it out since mackerel, like the flavor or not, is a healthy variety of fish to eat. I know this because my wife is a Registered Dietician. And it is surprisingly good. As good or better than the tuna packs I buy.
The package states "Mackerel Fillet". Do not expect a nice little fillet to come sliding out. I also see "responsibly sourced" and a "Product of Thailand". Nothing against Thailand.......but most of these Countries have very lax laws when it comes to harvesting seafood. So who knows? Was it Elon Musk who just said that you are not going to save the world by not eating meat....or some such thing. So we do the best we can.
I like it........but it is a matter of taste. One thing we know for sure......hot sauce makes anything good. And this stuff is perfect for some hot sauce or lemon juice!

I buy mackerel by the case so we can feed @ourcatcolony well for cheap. I tried a different brand that hubby and I enjoyed but cats did not. Chicken of the Sea is lower sodium and everyone likes it. We subscribed, so I'm hoping this supply doesn't dry up like other sellers.
Quality fish, with balanced water to fillets ratio.

Each fish is clean with all organs removed.
I feel like these size cans use to have more actual fish inside each can. The taste is good, I would prefer a no sodium option. All in all, as long as the price remains reasonable, I will keep my subscription going.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious canned fish

What I dislike about this king fish is that the packers don’t use proper packaging. They sent this mackerel in this plastic envelope and it’s smashed on the backside to. I hope I can open it with a can opener. Otherwise I love the taste it’s delicious I like this replacement Instead of salmon, which is really expensive, this chub mackerel is usually affordable I like to make fish stews and croquettes.

5.0 out of 5 stars I prefer this over tuna any day!

I like the chub mackerel because it doesn't smell like the crumbled or crushed mackerel, you know, like tuna is packaged. The chub is soft and moist and makes a much better fish salad sandwich than tuna, imo. I like the texture. I also like that it's basically the whole fish, canned....so I can actually see what I'm getting. Delicious for lunch!

3.0 out of 5 stars Better as an ingredient than a snack

I enjoy all kinds of tinned fish, in particularly yellowfin tuna, sardines, salmon, trout, and mackerel. I like tuna the best, but limit my consumption to around the levels recommended by the FDA to restrict mercury intake. Mackerel is the closest of the tinned fish to tuna, in general character, so it is my preference. I purchased this purely because it offers a far superior dollar value than other options on the market.

In brief, I would say this is inferior to smaller, 4.5oz tins of mackerel, like those sold by King Oscar. The fish are large and meaty, but more bony and a bit less tender. I found them to have a slight "formaldehyde" taste at times, which isn't terribly uncommon in large tins of fish but undesirable. Since these are in brine, I had to add my own oil, and while this works well enough in drained tuna here I found it didn't integrate well. Lastly, for me, 15oz is too much to consume in one go, but I really don't like putting the leftovers in the fridge as I like my tinned fish room temperature, not cold.

So the fish is of an adequate quality, but it doesn't fit my needs. I knew this was a risk when buying it, so I don't regret doing so, but having tried it I'd say if you want a snacking mackerel go with the ~4.5oz tins of fillets in oil instead of these. If you want mackerel for adding to a dish, I think these would be quite suitable.
