At first, I was skeptical about getting this for my wife as a birthday gift because of the price - I wondered if it was really worth it. Now that we've had it for almost a year, I can tell you it is DEFINITELY worth it! This ice maker is so amazing! It actually promotes hydration - you WANT to drink more water because you just love the ice! I was impressed at how fast the ice starts being made after turning it on. It does make a slight humming noise but it's at such a low decibel level so it's barely noticeable.

You do have to take good care of it though. Read the cleaning instructions and take the time to clean it on a regular basis. But do NOT try to open the top of the unit. It's very difficult to pry open and it's not worth the trouble. Just use the two cleaning methods that are mentioned in the manual... and you'll have great tasting ice in no time.

Our friends and family love when we have this ice ready when they come over! It's like getting Chick-Fil-A ice for free!

This is our 3rd opal (bought the first one from the original manufacturer, the 2nd one from GE after they bought it, and now this one). The first two both lasted approximately 18-24 months, while being used pretty much 24 hours a day. Both of them eventually failed because the hard water in our city eventually overwhelmed the pump motor and cause the machine to fail. It is very apparent that we are not the only customers to have experienced this problem....this version of it comes with far more explicit instructions on how to prepare the water that you put into the unit, along with features that will remind you when to clean and/or de-scale the machine. It seems to be running quieter than the previous version (of course the previous version started getting pretty loud just before it failed, so not 100% sure it is quieter than the previous version before the hard water scale built up in it). We plan to follow the instructions very closely, and we are using a water distiller to prepare the water before using it for ice....we will see if it holds up longer. I will plan to give an update after several months of using it given the new instructions.

This product seems great, love the type of ice, but the issue is the squeaking. After only 6 months use it has starting squeaking constantly and nothing we do will get it to stop. The item has been taken care of and cleaned. If this is a flaw, it needs to be addressed. Nothing from the company.
Update: item had to be returned, wasn’t even a year old, due to not producing ice. Finally got ahold of the company and got a replacement. The replacement however was only working properly for maybe two months, periodically stop making ice and make loud grinding noise. The company stated the warranty is void after the initial replacement. Sad that companies don’t stand behind their products, do not buy, too over priced for a product that can’t even last a year.
Latest update: the ice maker was received Nov of 2023, it didn’t even last 6 months, by January of 2024 was already making weird noises and not making ice. It was completely dead by February. Of course once they replaced it the warranty no longer exists & no option of paying for a new one. This company doesn’t back their product at at, worst appliance purchase I’ve ever made, what a waste.

Absolutely love this product. We have been debating getting an icemaker for a super long time and we finally pulled the trigger on this on Black Friday. Completely worth the purchase. Our ice maker in our fridge went out and we were hoping to find an alternative and I really wanted the pellet ice (like at Chick Fil A and Sonic) so we looked at this one. It was super easy to set up. We follow the cleaning instructions and let it run for a few cycles before using it to make ice. This is so awesome and makes a ton of ice. We only use filtered water which I would highly recommend (prevents build up). It is a a great purchase!

The GE makes great ice and lots of it and it has a self-cleaning mode.

For comparison, we had a Costway that broke after three years of continuous use. Its fan was loud when making ice, but its smaller ice bin filled quickly, so it didn't run for very long. It worked great, but it was very difficult to clean, requiring about 45 minutes with a toothbrush and flashlight to get the gunk out of its depths.

The GE's fan is almost silent, but the compressor makes a low omnidirectional 118 hertz hum at about 62 decibels. It's quieter than the Costway, but the GE makes more ice so it runs for longer periods.

Interestingly, my wife commented that the GE is louder. So psychologically, the longer (but quieter) run time seems noisier.

The sound might not be a problem if you have a loud household (kids, TV, dogs, etc.).

If you have a quiet household with a kitchen that's open to the living room and the ice maker is sitting on your countertop, then you might be annoyed.

We put the ice maker in our walk-in pantry, so it's out of sight and its sound is muted.

Despite the GE's weird loud-quietness, I think I'd still pick it because of its capacity, self-cleaning capability, the type of ice it makes, the lighted ice bin, and, being a $$ quality GE Profile product, it should last a lot longer (hope).

It can be controlled via an app which works with Google Home and presumably Alexa too, but unless turning the unit and bin light on/off remotely is a compelling feature, it’s not worth loading and configuring yet another third party middleware app (i.e., Smart HQ) to do so.
