Works great in a Unifi ecosystem

I recently upgraded my Unifi based home network. I had an old Edgerouter PoE that was starting to intermittently fail. I had thought the problem was my Unifi AC Pro that kept dropping, but I came to realize that it was due to inconsistent PoE power from the Edgerouter that was causing my issues. The Edgerouter consistently ran very hot, and it seems plausible that after 6 or so years that it would start to fail.

I ended up replacing the Edgerouter with the Unifi Dream Machine Special Edition. It not only gave me far greater control of my network assets, but it proved that the old Edgerouter was the culprit - no outages since the conversion. I had a third party wireless router configured as an access point that was still working, but since I implemented VLANs on the UDM-SE, I lost some wireless functionality since the 3rd party router could only broadcast 1 Wifi SSID, which was a problem. So, I replaced it with this AP.

It set up pretty easily - I had a few learning curve issues to contend with, but after some trial and error, the AP came up well. I kept it located where the old 3rd party AP was, and I now have seamless coverage with the multiple SSIDs without issue. I am no network expert, and the new capabilities required some patience, but it is all up and running, and I couldn't be happier.

There are still some network config issues that I have to resolve, but they are minor. This AP fits in well and provides the coverage intended, and I have much more control over how my network works!

Keep in mind, this is an access point and not a router. Yes, there is a difference and why this isn't labeled/called a router. It is intended to be mounted on the ceiling and there are no extra ethernet ports to connect additional wired components to, just to be clear. You DO NOT need a subscription. I highly recommend this AP for those that have good knowledge of networking and on its various components. It is a PoE device so make sure your switch has PoE ports or you'll need the injector. So far, superior quality build and performance; I am happy to finally be a part of the Ubiquiti ecosystem.

Excellent WIFI signal stability and device connections

As many mentioned, there is no issues using this AP as an addition to any router. And I want to mention an incorrect review statements in some reviwes below that UNIFI setup requires Subscription. NO IT DOES NOT. Setup is FREE AND NO ID NOR LOGIN TO UBIQUITY REQUIRED. You only need that login to have remote access if desired. But if you are setting AP locally and plan to change settings from your home wifi ones in a while, then skip the login and account creation pages during setup. Then create local ID and Password for UNIFI server APP for PC (my case). BTW The Ubiquity SW was named something like "UNIFI Controller" it has been changed to "Unify Network Server" if you are curious that you cant find and download older SW that was mentioned in many youtube tutorials. And that's it. it works like a charm, no reason to stress about accounts and subscriptions at this time.

Super easy and works great

Rarely am I so pleased with the product. Its excellent design is simple yet very easy to install. Simply drill a hole in the ceiling or wall location for ethernet cable, then use the supplied template to drill mounting holes for its mounting bracket. Then plug in the ethernet cable that is connected to your POE on the modem end and secure the unit to its bracket with the simple twist. The app is easy and intuitive for set up, which takes only a couple minutes. Boom, that’s it! High-speed Internet in my detached garage.

Excellent Wifi Coverage

Already had a Ubiquiti ER4, so when my Netgear Mesh died, it was an easy call with current prices.
Installed on the living room ceiling and we are good to go.
The App is easy to use, POE works, all is good.

These are solid products, been using them for many years. You do not need a subscription for anything with ubiquiti, other reviews that say you need a subscription to set these up - ignore that, its simply not true. They do take some tech skills to setup so if you are an IT illiterate person, you will probably face troubles. With that being said, if you have the know how to get these going you will not be disappointed. The only downside is their support is lacking and thats because they do not charge subscription fees...

Best WiFi Upgrade I've Ever Done

Coupled with the Unifi Dream Machine Pro, these APs are easily positioned to eliminate dead zones and given they can transmit multiple network VLANs, they provide a markedly superior upgrade in security as well. They are thoughtfully designed as a ceiling mounted and unobtrusive AP with no unsightly wires dangling or shelves needed. Almost everyone just goes to the big box stores to get an all-in-one wifi router to set-and-forget, but if you want real flexibility and capability, Unifi is the way to go.
