Goes a Long Way!

This easy-to-use imitation beef seems to swell to thousands of times its original size! A small amount goes a long way! The first time I used it, I used two full cups of the meat substitute, and then I spent the next two weeks trying to eat up the massive amount that was reconstituted. I recommend starting off with only 1/4 cup as that produces plenty for meals such as chili or spaghetti.

The texture and flavor are good. It pretty much takes on the taste of whatever seasonings you use, alongside its mild beef flavor.

Vegetarian meat substitutes are becoming increasingly expensive. While the initial price of this meat substitute seems high, it is a good value as it provides protein for many, many meals.

Perfect texture for tamales.

So I do not have a picture because there was no time for it but let me tell you this product was very easy to make and delicious!! I made tamales and I was worry a lot about the texture but it turn out to be perfect!! I rehydrate the whole package as instructed with veggie stock for more flavor and it grew in dice so much that I had to freeze part of it for another recipe. Great product! Definitely buying it again.

This is great but I only like it after simmering if the marinade for an hour then let sit in the fridge overnight (still in marinade). It comes put very nice this way. The chewiness is very much like beef and not a mushroom if you do. NOTE: My marinade was acidic which also may have has something to do with it! (Tomato juice, vinegar amongst other things)

Good Meat Substitute

Hydrated these as per directions using vegetable broth and they we very good. Made goulash with them and a friend who is not a vegan shared the moussaka I made with us said if she didn't know the "meat" was a substitute she would not have noticed. Goes also to show that many prepared dishes are more about texture and flavor than about the taste of meat. If you try this you won't be disappointed.

High sugar, low taste

This doesn't really taste like anything, it's just a mealy texture that resembles what you would expect from any mashed bean product.

Also, while there's no added sugar, the way this is processed and dried concentrates the natural sugar from the beans and each (rather small) serving contains the equivalent of two teaspoons of sugar. If you're on a regular diet, that's not much. But it's quite a bit if you're on a restricted diet and trying to cut sugar. (especially when I think most people are likely to eat double the serving size, since it's not very big)

The smell is also somewhat off putting unless you don't mind the smell of low grade dogfood, which is often a high concentration of exactly this type of product (compressed dried soy beans ~ as opposed to higher grade dog foods that have more meat and either less or no soy)

Just read the label, that's all this is, textured dry soy and a coloring agent, but at a much higher price than dried soy should be.

Overall if what you are looking for is dry soybean mash that you'll flavor yourself, this is serviceable so I gave it 3 stars. But it's not a product I can get excited about or recommend.

Also note: these products do not always survive shipping, their dry nature leads them to crumble and break down into either smaller bits or powder if they are subject to a lot of rough handling.

I was looking for another brand of textured protein that a friend showed me that they had used and I came across this one that looked like you got more for your money so I tried it and I love it. I made pepper steak and jerk chicken and they both were delicious. I made mine a little extra soft then stir fried it in the pan and it came out just the texture I wanted then I used it to make my dishes. I will definitely be buying this again even my none plant base family and friends loved it and I no longer need to pay $16.95 for a overpriced platter at the carry out honestly mine taste a lot better way less salty and I can freeze my own platters and have it anytime I want.

Blech! We are vegan and buy a good amount of this sort of faux meat products. I made a batch of our favorite broccoli "beef" using the product. I will say that even though the pieces are very small, the texture is very good. But the taste. It has a really bad aftertaste. You take a bite, say "say this isn't bad", then next thing you're saying " ick, what is wrong with this?" The flavor is way weird. Since we cooked it in a very familiar recipe of ours, it is obvious it's this product and not the recipe. Sorry for the waste, but a huge batch of broccoli "beef" went into the garbage can. Cannot recommend!!
