About this item

Meditations is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy.

Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. Some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the first book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the second book was written at Carnuntum.

It is unlikely that Marcus Aurelius ever intended the writings to be published and the work has no official title, so "Meditations" is one of several titles commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs.

The Meditations is divided into 12 books that chronicle different periods of Aurelius' life. Each book is not in chronological order and it was written for no one but himself. The style of writing that permeates the text is one that is simplified, straightforward, and perhaps reflecting Aurelius' Stoic perspective on the text. Depending on the English translation, Marcus' style is not viewed as anything regal or belonging to royalty, but rather a man among other men, which allows the reader to relate to his wisdom.

What more can i say about this book that hasn't been said over the past 2,000 years? It's a brilliant work by a profound thinker. His private notes and aphorisms are surprisingly familiar and accessable to this modern reader, no doubt due to the excellent job of the translator. The introduction is a worthy and informative read. I enjoyed reading it thoroughly. This translation is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Translation. Hard to know what is precise and accurate.

Read from several historians that this translation captures more of the intent and meaning than most. Easier to understand, but, is it the correct meaning, and do I get the proper understanding? Don't sweat it. This is not going on your final grade. It DID allow me to NOT have the issue most deliver where there is something confusion, portions in parentheses or italics to give a literal translation when I do not know the language's syntax. My best example is Italian, noun then adjective. Bibi cafe means 'drink: coffee' and is a popular enough soft drink... but translated into English as "drink coffee" (a verb).
This guy takes pains to be better at current modern meanings and in a decade or three may be as helpless as those older translations from the proverbial dawn of modernity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Edition, but filled with formatting issues.

This is the first edition of Meditations that I ever read, and I read it because it was recommended by Ryan Holiday of the Daily Stoic. It is much more easy to read than the olde english version with thous thys and thees. That all being said, this ebook version is rife with formatting errors that interrupt the regular flow of reading. Nothing that is a deal breaker, as formatting errors can be fixed and you can report such errors, but still a bit of a disappointment for such an excellent translation. I would rate it lower if such issues were not able to be fixed, and this is the edition I recommend for people seeking a copy of Meditations.

This is an English translation of a classic work of philosophy that's still just as important as it was when it was published many centuries ago.

This is a print-on-demand product. It's about the same paper quality and printing as you'd get if you printed it yourself on a laser. It IS perfectly bound though, which you can't do at home. I think of it more like a workbook that I'm going to take notes in and hilite. Its size makes it comfortable to write in. I wasn't impressed with it, but I'm not disappointed either. And anyone, the obstacle is the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than it seems

Here we have Marcus talking to himself. His musings are extremely repetitive, always returning to the same lessons he feels he needs to remind himself of again and again. And yet, I cannot help but believe that I am a better person for having read it. Perhaps I needed these reminders as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Larger size than I'd expected.

One thing I didn't pay attention to was the size of the book. It's a full 8 1/2 X 11. I've ordered several books and guess i just expected it to be a similar size. Not something you can just tuck into a pocket and bring with you to read. Wish it came in a more compact size.

I also bought the Kindle version of this since it was on sale. It is definitely not the "New Translation" as advertised.
