About this item

“Kellerman doesn’t just write psychological thrillers—he owns the genre.”—Detroit Free Press

Her name is Elise Freeman, and her chilling cry for help comes too late to save her. On a DVD found near her lifeless body, the emotionally and physically battered woman chronicles a long ordeal of abuse at the hands of three sadistic tormentors. But even more shocking is the revelation that the offenders, like their victim, are teachers at one of L.A.’s most prestigious prep schools. Homicide detective Milo Sturgis is assigned to probe the hallowed halls of Windsor Prep Academy, and if ever he could use Dr. Alex Delaware’s psychological prowess, it’s now. As the scandal-conscious elite close ranks around Windsor Prep, Alex and Milo push to expose the dirty secrets festering among society’s manor-born. But while searching for predators among the privileged, Alex and Milo may be walking into a highly polished death trap.

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Jonathan Kellerman's

I always enjoy Jonathan Kellerman’s works. This book looks at corruption in the prep school/standardized testing world, which was probably ripped right from the headlines. This is a great read!

Of all the books in this series, of which I've read many & not necessarily in order of publication, this novel is, by far, the most complexly plotted with more intertwining threads than a bow of angel hair! I can only imagine how difficult it must be for the author to reveal just enough plausible information to mislead his viewers and send them off in the wrong direction, all the while keeping the integrity of the storyline sufficiently coherent so that at the very end, he hasn't left us with improbable loose ends or tied himself and his characters into such logic knots that the ultimate solution isn't contradicted by previous events or doesn't seem implausible. How does he manage to do all of this so skillfully and, simultaneously, write such pithy dialogue that doesn't come off as either trite or smug? My only criticism, which is really more of an observation, is the obsession with identifying in great detail the navigational routes, time taken & distances traveled throughout LA. - even down to naming the various freeways, streets & boulevards. I've found this to be true of many authors who use LA as the setting for the majority of their works, especially those written as part of a series. Just a minor pet peeve of mine. Or perhaps I'm reading too many novels set in LA recently.

I love this series! A well written complex mystery with well developed, interesting characters! Wealth, privilege, jealous, corruption, greed, deception and disregard for life are intricately woven as Alex and Milo follow the leads. Great police and psychological procedural! As each layer unfolds, the extent of the deception is revealed!

I love this series. Keeps me guessing to the end and hooks me in so all I want to do is read. Have to make sure I’m caught up on laundry before I begin a new Alex Delaware novel. Thanks.

My book came in quickly by UPS - it was in real good condition - a few wrinkled pages, but I'm not
complaining.

This is standard Alex Delaware stuff. I liked it because I've been reading them from the beginning. It's always like getting together again with some old friends. Kellerman's imagery and supporting characters still stand out, and the throwaway psychological references are interesting, sometimes fascinating, usually informative. By now, though, it's a pretty well worn formula. He churns 'em out at least once a year, they're always a quick read and, after reading the last few books, it seems they might be getting a little "lite"; I'd hate to say perfunctory, but there's a tiny nagging feeling that he might be starting to phone them in. As much as I'd hate to see the end of the Delaware books, I'd rather that than have them run into the ground. I'd like to see a longer book, darker, with more complexity and substance. Also, the two main characters -- Alex and Milo -- seem a bit two dimensional these days. We know Alex is the best of the good guys; let's see some of his darker side, lets see him seriously screw something up and see how he (and Milo and Robin) deal with it. Also, Milo is openly gay, but except for a very few glancing references, you'd sure as hell never know it. Develop a little of Milo and Rick together, or all four of them in a social setting (Robin barely exists, too). I guess Kellerman is portraying Milo as keeping his private life private and not relevant to his work, which makes sense, but it often comes off more as though he's self-loathing his own sexuality, that Kellerman is using him as the token queer in a half-hearted attempt to make some sort of social statement that never manifests into anything meaningful, but instead almost comes off as somehow subtly homophobic. Having said all that, I'll surely buy the next one. I'll just be hoping for a little more.

Sadly all of this is true. It will never change unless something or someone can get it done. I can go on. This of course was the best. I love your books.
