I currently use this on my Nikon ZFC and it’s a very good lens. The focus is decent and the sharpness is really good… Surprisingly good!

4.0 out of 5 stars It just works!

It sounds like a low bar, but it just works is miles above a lot of other inexpensive third-party lenses. I wouldn't describe the auto focus as fast, but it's more than sufficient for a wide angle lens where the generous depth of field makes sharpness less critical.

There's a bit of vignetting, which you might not even notice after you've composed your shot. Editing my photos, I notice there's some color quantizing. (The posted examples are unedited, aside from converting from NEF to JPG, taken on a Nikon Zf.)

It's not a macro lens, but the minimum focus distance is generous, allowing you to compose beautiful backgrounds on close subjects. 20mm is a nice focal length in that there's not a lot of distortion and you can get a lot of depth stopping down just a bit.

The lens is lightweight, which might feel cheap to some, but if you've got several prime lenses in your bag, you might appreciate. There's no rattle and the focus ring operation is smooth, so I don't have any doubts of the build quality. There's no aperture ring, so there's less complexity.

I appreciate the lens hood, if anything just to protect the frontal element when I set the camera down.

For travel, this lens has become a go-to for me. It's lightweight, simple, not-to-dear, and 20mm full-frame seems to work for a wide variety of shots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking little lens

Just moved into the z-mount space been shooting Nikon for 40 years. I needed something wider than 24mm @ F4. I got to say this is one of the best lenses I have ever come across. For the money the build quality is amazing considering it’s made of a composite material. When compared to a Nikon 50mm D type lens which was one of Nikons cheapest lenses I would say the viltrox 20mm is far better in quality. I was able to hand hold at lower shutter speeds than I could have imagined my only wish is that if it could have been weather sealed this lens would have been unbeatable in this space. For the price it’s a no brainer in terms of if you should get it. In my opinion every camera bag should have one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wild distortion

This is one major bummer of a lens: for its price, it's beautifully made, small, and handsome but has some optical flaws that make it more or less unusable for many types of photography.

Pros: nothing about this lens looks slapdash or low rent—it's even handsome, with its matte plastic barrel and svelte little lens hood. Packaging and presentation are good, almost Sigma-level. Autofocus is quick and quiet: it reminds me of Fujifilm's excellent little XF 23/2. For casual wide-angle shooting, snapshots, etc. it's perfectly usable and even has a bit of "character." Very contrasty, if you like that sort of thing.

Cons: As a wide-angle prime, lenses like this are handy for work like interiors, architecture, environmental portraiture, documentary, etc. So, it's a big deal that it is riddled with complex distortion, the likes of which I've never seen before. Barrel distortion (lines that bulge toward the edges of the frame at the outer edge of the frame) or pincushion distortion (lines that look sucked in toward the center) are common even on good wide-angle lenses, but they're easily fixed with common editing tools. This thing, though, has some wild, wavy, complex distortion that makes all straight lines anywhere near the edges of the frame look like they were shot through fun house mirrors—there no easy way fix for that sort of thing. It's hilariously bad.

Other cons, none of them so bad: Very contrasty, if you don't like that sort of thing. Color seems significantly different than Nikkor Z lenses, which could also be a cool bonus, unless you're using alongside other lenses for work where you'll need some color consistency. Vignette is pretty gnarly until at least 5.6, but it's actually a pleasant, progressive pattern.

Moral of the story: this thing seemed like it could be a rad secret weapon and the price is incredible. It looks great and is almost inexpensive enough to keep around for fun stuff where you'd want a little wide angle. If you mostly want it for snapshot or street work, this might be a good cheap option but for any sort of work where straight lines are critical, keep on lookin'!

I bought this to supplement my Nikon 24-120MM lens with is my standard shooting choice on my Nikon Z8. Right off the bat the camera is materially lighter to use. This is big as coupled with high quality optical features this lens shoots beautifully. It also has the optical tweaks built into Photoshop and Lightroom. They help dissipate soft corners and other unwanted optical aberrations. Overall an excellent optical performer and well built exceeded what you would expect for the money. Need even shaper pictures, shoot 5.6.
