This book is extremely well written with many thoughtful examples of experiences and research. If one really considers its foundation and its goal, life will look different and better the day one finishes reading it.

I, too, grew up in Arizona, born into an LDS and politically conservative family. After coming out as a lesbian at age 16 and going through my own faith crisis, I thought I could change my family’s beliefs with my anger and outrage. After reading this book, I quickly learned that love is the only emotion that will let us heal as a family and move toward progression. I’m here to say that this book will change lives; it’s already changed mine.

As a gay man who has a similar religious background to Dr. Salmon, I was able to relate to many facets discussed in this book. I zipped through this baby in two days and felt connected to his experiences with the struggle between hearing "I was worthless and sinful" in my head as a young boy, and living my truth as I grew to be an adult. I was shook by my own ignorance, even as someone who feels they're pretty "woke" and inspired to become a beacon of kindness, love, and inclusion for all.

This book is a gentle but eye opening gift for people in our lives struggling to choose between accepting and loving people for who they are and religion, as many have been taught to understand it. I recommend this book for anyone that knows someone that is queer (even if they're cool with it), anyone that is questioning their identity/sexuality, and anyone that is fully living their truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars bought a copy for my brother

I grew up in a conservative, semi-religious family as a closeted kid, constantly fearing the impact of coming out on my parents' reputation and our community. This fear of bringing shame was a significant challenge.

Dr. Salmon's story, set in an even more religious and public-facing family, showcases his unwavering courage to live authentically while staying true to his values. His journey is profoundly inspirational. One of the messages—that we must change ourselves rather than expecting the world to change—resonates deeply.

Reading helps me understand diverse life experiences, fostering empathy and understanding. This book is particularly valuable for those who share this interest or struggle with society's rapid changes. I've already bought a copy for my brother, hoping it helps his perspective.

I highly recommend this insightful and thought-provoking book.

Any religious family or lgbtq person can benefit from reading this literature. I would make it mandatory if I could, as a survivor of conversion therapy with a very deep rooted heritage in the Mormon faith I can definitely see pathways to conflict resolutuon, healing, and greater understanding between queer people and their religious families.

Loved his acceptance and tolerance of views other than his own. Forgiveness liberates all of us. Pluralism and diversity is a two way street. This is what I got out of the book… To be loved, you must love. To be understood, you must understand. To be forgiven, you must forgive.
