How to Stop Being Toxic by Leon Lyons is an exceptionally insightful and transformative guide that delves deep into the complexities of our behaviors and their profound impact on our relationships and overall well-being. Lyons' approach is not only enlightening but also deeply transformative, offering readers a chance to embark on a journey of profound self-discovery and personal growth.

One of the book's standout features is its focus on helping readers identify toxic traits within themselves and understand how these traits can affect those around them. Lyons adeptly discusses toxic behaviors such as narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, highlighting their insidious and contagious nature, as well as the vicious cycles they can create.

What truly sets this book apart is its emphasis on providing actionable steps and exercises for self-improvement. Lyons places a strong emphasis on the importance of emotional and self-awareness, encouraging readers to reflect deeply on their own behaviors and relationships. Moreover, he offers invaluable insights into breaking toxic cycles and creating positive, healthy relationships.

I particularly appreciated Lyons' use of personal anecdotes throughout the book, where he candidly discusses his own struggles with toxic traits. This added a level of honesty, authenticity, and relatability to the book, making it not only engaging but also highly accessible.

Additionally, each chapter of How to Stop Being Toxic includes a key points section that succinctly summarizes the main ideas discussed. I found this feature to be incredibly helpful for organizing my thoughts and journaling about them. The book strongly encourages journaling, especially for the exercises at the end of each chapter, which I personally found to be a valuable tool for self-reflection and personal growth.

Furthermore, Lyons empowers readers towards introspection, guiding them through what can often be a daunting and challenging journey. His use of reputable sources, including studies and statistics from prestigious institutions such as Stanford University, the Harvard Business Review, and the Cleveland Clinic, adds a layer of credibility and trustworthiness to the knowledge shared in the book.

One of the book's key insights is its discussion on the root causes of toxic traits, such as insecurity, low self-esteem, unresolved trauma, lack of emotional intelligence, poor communication skills, and environmental factors. Lyons emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and empathy, suggesting that seeking professional help may also be beneficial for those struggling with toxic behaviors. I deeply appreciated how Lyons connects the healing of toxic traits with other aspects of life, such as business leadership and personal relationships. This holistic approach underscores the value of addressing toxic behaviors not just for personal growth but also for enhancing various aspects of our lives that we value deeply.

Another valuable takeaway from the book was learning how to identify emotional triggers, something I've personally struggled with in the past. The book provides clear, proactive steps for working with emotional triggers, with mindfulness and cognitive reappraisal being particularly effective techniques that have helped me tremendously.

How to Stop Being Toxic offers a refreshing perspective on personal growth and development. Lyons' compassionate approach and genuine desire to help readers shines through in every chapter. This book is not just about recognizing toxic traits; it's about empowering individuals to make positive changes in their lives. It is a comprehensive and invaluable guide for anyone looking to understand and change toxic behaviors. Lyons' thoughtful guidance, backed by research and personal anecdotes, makes this book a valuable tool for anyone on a journey towards self-discovery, personal growth, and positive change. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships!

I have read a book by this author before and I will say this is just another great workbook by them. It is a consistent type of writing they do which I appreciate thoroughly as someone who loves when people can simplify more complex issues so others can understand. Along with the exercises he gives you and the area to journal notes or answers to these exercises. It explains how to recognize signs of toxicity and how to do better for not just yourself but those around you. I do hope to encourage those of you looking in these reviews to read this book.
