5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional craftsman for a Introductory Guitar
Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024
I am simply amazed at the quality on this instrument. I have taken delivery today and writing this review after playing for a few hours. First fretwork is amazing beautifully polished, tops and ends, The fretboard edge is even beveled slightly, a nice upgrade touch. The neck is straight and true so far no ftet buzzing even after lowering the action. The wood grain finish on the body is subtle but looks great, the neck pocket has no spacings at all. The tuners are smooth we will see if they hold tune but the seem above average for a budget guitar. The rosewood neck shows beautiful grain.

The body is full size but not overly heavy, the neck is slim and has a relatively flat 13" radius, accordingly it plays easly and smooth like an Ibanez. The tone and sound are great it sounds "like a stat" i would say with a warmer tone, I really like the bridge humbucker instead of the more twangy single coil. The squatted off Bottom lets the guitar res comfortable on the leg for playing sitting down.

I would say this is on part with the EART Strat mode, but without the SS Frets. The nut seems to be cut properly , the volume and tone pots have a nice resistance found on more expensive guitars, CONS the bridge is the "early Type" fender stamped bridge its functional but cheap looking. The guitar has stayed in tune with moderate Trem use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as rounded at the edges as the Squier but an equally great package to own

This review is based on the package deal for the Yamaha Pacifica and comparing it with others like the Fender Squier both comparable in price and performance. If you’re looking for the best package, you should consider all options.

Both the Yamaha and the Fender are awesome packages and as a package, they are both a draw. The Pacifica comes well packaged including a paper sleeve over the strings for protection. This guitar is a tad bit thicker and heavier than the Squier Affinity by Fender yet has a smaller body. Like other models, Yamaha provides a tapered front and back for comfort. The Pacifica is not as rounded at the edges like the Squier Affinity. The Pacifica body is shapelier with a longer extended horn and more robust center curves. The less rounded edges of the Yamaha make it easier to play sitting down as it hugs the legs better and doesn’t slide down like the Strats. The Squier Affinity is a more rectangular shape with less pronounced curves and a smaller horn traditional for a Stratocaster. Both are beautiful to play and to look at so this is a real draw.
The Pacifica does something the Fender Strats don’t do. The humbucker on the Yamaha actually responds to the tone control when the switch is in the position 5 setting. You can really boost the highs with a 10 tone setting using the HB position. Even at setting 4 where the middle pickup and the HB both are active, there is a noticeable treble boost with the maximum tone setting at 10. The Fender Stratocasters have an extra tone control, one for the neck single coil and the other for the middle single coil. Neither tone control on the Strats work with either the single coil bridge pickup or the HB because Fender feels the proximity to the bridge where highs are naturally accentuated and the nature of the HB pickup doesn’t need a treble boost. The Fender Strats have the bridge single coil pickup angled down at the high E string so the treble is boosted only at the treble strings since the contacts with the treble strings are closer to the bridge. Yamaha defied the wisdom of Fender and simplified the tone control to only one control to handle all three pickups simultaneously, including the HB. Hats off to Yamaha since the treble boost is always a welcome advantage.

The 15watt amp is perfect for the job. It is not a professional grade amp but more than suitable for home. It is the most compact and equally powerful amp as any other in a package deal.

The Pacifica package is a superbly crafted package you will be glad to own. I am an avid Yamaha fan and this Pacifica will not disappoint. As an owner of a Yamaha piano and two Yamaha acoustic guitars, none, including Fender comes close in my opinion to the quality and sound of Yamaha. Yamaha unlike any other make detail their priority. The metallic blue is as beautiful to look at as it is to play. This package except for a low quality cable is everything you will need. Remember the Swiff Audio wireless transmitter and receiver for less than $80 will resolve the cable issue and make playing this guitar a real pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guitar!
Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2009
This is one great guitar!

As a beginner, I cannot claim to know much about guitars, but I did do my research. Yamaha make great musical instruments and this guitar is recommended as a great beginner guitar by several places, including About. The package has everything you need to get started.

THE GOOD:
The guitar - One great instrument. The build feels solid and not at all cheap. The strings are close the the fret board which is great. The tuners are very smooth and feel good. The guitar also has 3 pickups and 5 positions which allow you to change up the sound of he guitar from rock to jazz. Basically, this is a really good guitar. And it has two nobs for volume and tone.
The Amplifier - This is a good beginner amplifier. It is small and has 15 watts. It has two channels: Clean and Dirty. Plenty nobs for us beginners to play with: gain, dirty volume, clean volume, treble, middle, bass. Also has a quarter inch headphone jack. Despite what majority might think, 15 watts is enough for just about anything you'll be doing. The 15 watts allows you to turn up the gain all the way up and keep the volume down and still have it sound good.
The electric tuner - a nice little add-on for beginners.
The DVD - great place as any to start. Goes over the basics and teaches several chords.
Other - comes with extra strings :)

THE BAD:
The guitar - none at all.
The Amp - the only bad thing with it (for what it is), is that the headphones jack is a 1/4 inch jack so most of us with 3.5mm standard headphone will either need to get new headphones or adapter to use it. But it is no big deal in my opinion.
The Guitar Cable - it is one cheap cable. Mine broke after 4 days. I also noticed that in the dvd that was provided, the instructor didn't use the cable that was provided but a monster cable, which I found to be funny. You can get a monster cable for pretty cheap here on Amazon, so again, nothing too serious. Order one when you order the guitar so you don't have to wait like I do.
The Guitar Strap - again pretty cheap. It is like one of those run of the mill nylon straps that you see. I am going to invest in a better one but this one will do for most. On a side note, and this is with all guitars. Invest in peg locks. They will prevent the strap from coming off the pegs on the guitar. When putting on my guitar the strap slipped off the peg, but luckily I was holding the guitar very firmly. Again, this is true for all guitars and not just this one.

Bottom line: Great guitar, great package, great buy. I am happy with it.
