Bought this for day 1 release and I have played through it a couple times now, it's a great game with a ton of secrets to find!

The game is super difficult, and yet very rewarding.

Be warned that completing the npc questlines can be frustrating due to the fact many characters can impact other NPCs questlines and if you made the wrong choice, you could potentially failed many in one go and have to wait for the next game cycle to complete properly.

Great game, once you learn the new mechanics unique to the game. Though play style is similar to the prior fromsodt souls games. It does its own thing with specific game mechanics, so take heed!

Fun with the Right Build

Edit: I played the game again (still PS4 version) but now on the PS5, which greatly helps with load times. After using a bloodhound sword build, it was a lot more fun - so, as in my original review below, having the right build is key.

This is a review based on playing for over 100 hours. I'm sure that a good chunk of that was spent on loading screens after getting killed repeatedly. This is another Dark Souls-type game, except it's more poorly balanced than ever, making it an exercise in frustration that is more similar to Sekiro than Dark Souls (though still better than Sekiro). It's now also open world, and makes many of the same mistakes of other open world games.

Combat
- Bosses and many regular mobs do constant chain attacks, with little to no opening in between that would allow you to attack. This renders slower weapons useless.
- Many mobs will chain cast spells, constantly interrupting anything you do, while you watch them kill you.
- Mobs have extreme reach with their weapons, while you have very little. Often, I find myself standing right next to large mob and unable to hit it with my sword at all. The swings just don't connect.
- Mobs are programmed to perfect dodge spells. You have very little "mana" to cast spells to begin with, making mage combat pointless in many situations.
- Similar to spell dodging, many mobs will perfect dodge your weapon swings too, and constantly hop around over large distances, forcing you to chase after them constantly.
- You can summon spirits to help you on most bosses, but the balance is completely off. Sometimes, they make the fight trivial, sometimes they make it more difficult, but always, they it make it less fun.
- Most spells in the game are useless, including all of the top tier spells I have found. They do comical damage at a high cost. There are a few good ones but only in specific situations.
- Many bosses and mini-bosses are reused. Often, you will also face two mini-bosses at once making the fight completely unfair, and requiring the use of summons to even stand a chance.
- In the late game, even regular mobs are completely overpowered (can kill you in about 2 hits) so it's easier to just run past them than bother fighting.
- Late game bosses are impossible to kill unless using a specific build with a specific strategy. And I do mean, no matter how many times you practice them, you will not improve unless you switch builds.

Exploration
- The open world has a few distinct areas, but can often get repetitive, and look the same (i.e., large for the sake of being large).
- You will often encounter the same game elements throughout. For example, there are ruins and caves (that all look about the same) and always end with either a mini-boss or a chest.
- The NPC quest lines are as obtuse as always, requiring following a guide to complete them (which I did not do, and missed out on several).

Overall, the game should have had multiple difficulty settings and focused on 1 vs. 1 boss fights, instead of relying on gimmicks like summons. The open world can be fun to explore, but is at times empty and serves little purpose.
