4.0 out of 5 stars Local Woman Missing: A Gripping Disappearance with Twists and Turns
Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2024
Mary Kubica's "Local Woman Missing" is a suspenseful thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end. The story unfolds in a small, seemingly peaceful community that's rocked by the disappearance of two women, Shelby Tebow and Meredith Dickey, along with Meredith's young daughter, Delilah.
The novel is narrated from multiple perspectives, including members of the affected families, friends, and neighbors, as well as by a mysterious stranger. This allows readers to piece together the puzzle from various angles, building suspense and raising questions about each character's motives and secrets.
Kubica does an excellent job of portraying the emotional toll the disappearances take on the characters. The desperation of the families, the frustration of the police, and the growing fear within the community are all palpable. The novel also explores the complexities of family relationships, particularly the bond between mothers and daughters.
    Some key considerations -
    1. Twists and Reveals: The book is full of unexpected twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. When you think you've figured things out, Kubica throws in a new piece of information that changes everything.
    2. Well-developed characters: Despite the multiple perspectives, Kubica creates well-developed characters that readers can connect with. Each character has flaws and vulnerabilities, making them all the more realistic.
    3. Fast Pace: The story moves quickly, with short chapters that make it easy to devour the book in one sitting.
    4. Slow Start: Some readers might find the beginning of the book to be slow, as Kubica sets the scene and introduces the characters. However, the pace picks up quickly once the disappearances occur.
Overall, "Local Woman Missing" is a well-written and suspenseful thriller that will stay with you long after you finish reading it. It's an excellent choice if you're looking for a book to keep you guessing and emotionally invested.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of twists and turns!

Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica was a very entertaining Psychological mystery. There are many twists and turns that kept me guessing. It is about a family, Meredith, Jason are parents to Delilah and Leo. It is written in first person from each characters position. Also, two ladies that live across from them, Kate and Bea. Meredith and Delilah are missing and the story unfolds from 11 years back as all happens and then the present as where everyone is today. I enjoyed this to the end and that was my only criticism was the ending seemed to end abruptly. I think they should have had something about how the characters ended more of an epilogue. This one kept me up reading for sure!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read with disappointing ending

This book was well written, had an interesting plot and certainly kept me guessing. However the “twist” was unrealistic, the rabbit trails of potential “who done its” were too many, fell flat and the ending was completely unrealistic. It was good bedtime “brain candy” but not one I’ll rave about to friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun read

This was a fun book to read, it gets right into it from the first chapter. Theres no build-up time or pointless detail, so you will be hooked and wanting more right from the start! I love the way it is written from differing points of view, some being past and some being present. My only warning would be to make sure you have some time before starting the book! You won’t want to put it down It plays in the emotions of the reader. It was sad at times and there were moments when one of the characters, Meredith, frustrated me!! I just couldn’t relate to her. She has a beautiful family and caring, loving husband but seems too immature to appreciate it. She can be so open and honest with her clients but can’t have an adult conversation with her husband that would save her a lot of heartache through the beginning stages of the book. I know it’s part of the plot line, but I had a very hard time feeling sorry for her. Her son, Leo, seems like a punk when you first meet him, but as you learn about him, you empathize with him and realize he is just a troubled kid with a good heart. SPOILERS…. Stop here!!

While reading, I felt that Kate and Bea have a good relationship and are both genuinely caring people, but the “music studio” gave me creepy vibes. At the end, looking back on their interactions, I like the way the author subtly gave some hints to Bea’s controlling nature without actually putting you on a thought path that she could be involved.
