I'm an audio snob, at least pro audio. I used to be a live sound engineer for small events. I prided myself on the quality of my PA system (JBL SR-series speakers, Carver amplification). Having said that I sold all my equipment 25 years ago.
I was on the lookout for a very affordable set of speakers to go with my 20' inflatable movie screen. I didn't have a large budget to work with as this is just for fun and entertainment for my family and neighbors. I knew from my experience that given the size of area I wanted to cover, that I needed a horn-loaded PA-type speaker. I also wanted the option for battery power as these would occasionally be used in remote settings.
These would not be my first choice given my experience. Anything that has RGB lighting as a gimmick would normally be immediately disregarded (more on that later), however I otherwise liked the look of these.
It took about a week to arrive, and in my case, both speakers look brand new. Even the boxes could have been mistaken for new. All functions on each speaker work as expected. They are much sturdier than I expected of an ultra-low-end PA speaker.
So, how do they sound? Well, they're okay. They are honestly better than I expected. There are large gaps in the frequency response, particularly in the upper midrange, but much of that can be corrected with a little equalization. I am surprised at the low-end frequency response. With PA type drivers, you can usually not expect much bass response from a 10" driver, but these have pretty good, albeit fairly muddy, bass output. The low-end response dips quite a bit when I put them on stands, but it also helps with the muddiness. Speaking of the driver, my first task after my 90-day warranty is up on them is to apply a light coat of matte-black paint and to disable the LED lights (you can turn them off, but they always come back on when power is restored).
I am glad that these have a battery. They work very well, and at least pass the 2-hour high-volume movie test with plenty to spare.
No, these are not the greatest speakers, but for $110, they fit my bill well.
Haven't used the microphones other than to ensure they worked. They don't sound fantastic, but reasonable.
