5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended guide if you travel to Roma

It's been more than 10 years since I was in Rome and the truth is that I fell in love with this city. This guide has reminded me of some of the most emblematic places I have been to, such as the Colosseum or Vatican City. The Vatican Museum, as the book says, houses works by great Renaissance painters. The guide seems very representative to me. Maybe I would have liked there to be more photos, but I have resorted to the images that I still have in my memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sites and Culture of Rome--Great Beginning!

Full disclosure. I’m traveling to Italy this summer and plan to spend three days in Rome before setting off for the western coast of Italy, Sicily and eventually landing in Malta. I’ve been to Rome before—it is one of my favorite cities. It is easy to navigate with the Metro system—subway and busses. You buy a pass—relatively inexpensive—and can ride reliable transportation to wherever you want. I speak Italian and my best friend was born in Italy.

That said, I’ve done the usual haunts—the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, the Spanish Steps, and I know I’ll probably take some time to return to some of the places I’ve
been before, but I’m looking for someplace different—compelling but out of the way—not your typical tourist destination.

That’s why I picked up the Rome Travel Guide 2024. I like this guide because the author doesn’t assume you’re an idiot traveler—in other words, there are things she assumes you know, but on the other hand, she’s careful to offer some gentle advice on the basics. For example, is your passport good for at least 3 months from the time you’re traveling? Her book is filled with fascinating details that maybe I knew but have forgotten, or, perhaps, never knew. For example—that Michelangelo designed St. Peter’s Dome. You can pay by a credit card but bring some cash (Euro) with you, just in case. I’ve been to those small trattorias where there only five things on the blackboard that you can order, but you can bet your wallet they will all be homecooked and delicious. But you must pay in cash and walk down an alley away from the center of the city to find them. The author mentions a few Roman dishes that are to die for.

This is what I really love about this guide book: It’s a reasonable sized travel guide book that offers brief explanations of the more important sites. It gives you a thumbnail breakdown of each Roman neighborhood and what you should see there. It prods you to dress casual but maybe a notch above. The author encourages you to learn some basic phrases. Italians are incredibly generous and friendly people but a Ciao or Grazie goes a long way. The chapter I loved best—because it fit my needs—was Hidden Treasures of Rome: Unveiling Hidden Gems. I had to laugh because one of the recommended sites is The Capuchin Crypt which features the bones of 4,000 Capuchin monks arranged into intricate patterns. Oooh.

I highly recommend this book as a good foray into Rome if you plan to go. You’ll probably need to reference other sources, but reading this book from cover to cover will give you a good background on the sites as well as the culture of Rome. 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Experience

I feel like I have already walked the cobblestone streets of Rome after reading this book! It touched on anything I've ever wanted to see in that city. I was especially impressed with the ways the author suggested to keep the atmosphere of Rome alive, such as learning the language, exploring the cuisine, and using Italian decor in your home once your in-person experience is over. Good resource for your trip.

The book "Rome Travel Guide: Unlocking Rome's Timeless Marvels, Embark on a Journey Through Ancient Grandeur and Modern Splendor" includes good information about Rome and sites to see but is some what lacking in being useful as a travel guide. I would have liked more photos as well as itinerary options.

It is a bit superficial for the most part. There are some good points and I still enjoyed reading it. It is a short quick read and thus dosent get into much depth at all.
