On Her Watch was definitely a gut wrenching read dealing with a serial killer targeting pregnant women. I can’t wait to read the next one!
Thank you Montlake and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC for this incredible read! Can’t wait for number 9!
Great characters, fast paced, filled with great details. Bree Taggert is a favorite!
After two hikers find a tarp-wrapped body in the woods, Sheriff Bree Taggert searches the surrounding area and finds two more bodies. Convinced they've found a serial killer's dumping ground, Bree quickly begins her investigation. Working with investigator Matt Flynn, Bree goes to interview one of the victim's best friends only to find the woman's apartment ransacked and set on fire. With another woman missing, the search for the killer has escalated and Bree needs to find the killer quickly before another woman dies.
On Her Watch opens with a young girl running away from home before the book jumps forward in time to Bree getting the call about the hikers finding a body in the woods. When Bree arrives to the scene, it doesn't take long to discover two additional bodies nearby. Serial killer cases tend to make really interesting mysteries so I was looking forward to seeing this plot play out. Also, I was curious how that opening chapter would end up being connected to the plot. Soon after Bree begins her investigation, another woman goes missing which definitely makes things more urgent as the hope is to find her alive. The case goes in several directions and I was somewhat surprised by the reveal of the killer's identity. The final confrontation with the killer was very well done with the perfect mix of action and suspense.
Bree is a great main character and she's come a long way since the first book in the series. She's much more open now and willing to let others in. Her relationship with Matt continues to be amazing. The two moved in together in the previous book and I really enjoyed the little moments we got to see of them together at home with the kids. Bree's family is threatened as a result of her investigation and I have to say that's one thing I didn't love about this book as I feel like they've been targeted so many times throughout the series. Thankfully everything works out for the better and everyone is alright.
Overall On Her Watch was a great read and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Track Her Down, when it releases next year.
Bree and Matt were once again on the trail of a serial killer. This time there were very few clues and even less leads. As the bodies started piling up they had more questions than answers. With a state wide flu wiping out every branch of the police force, they were short handed and working around the clock. I love the way they work so well together and their interactions with the community and their family make them more human. Bree really cares about the community and struggles with asking her family for help, but this is the first book where she finally admits to herself that it’s okay to have a community help her raise her sister’s kids.
After 7 books, Matt has finally moved in with Bree. I’ve loved how their professional and personal relationship has progressed. They both seemed to show their affection more in this book, even in the field.
Overall this was a great thriller. I loved the investigation aspect as well as the small amount of romance thrown in. I love the secondary characters of Grey’s Hollow and the way they add to the story. I can’t wait for the next installment in this series!
The characters continue to grow personal, professionally, and as a team.
The plot is limited by the region but we do get to see how the author is able to make it seem like a normal local area in rural America.
The story is well thought out with several twists that make the story different than other murder mystery thrillers. The pace is perfect to scope and practice to keep you interested in the mystery but also in characters we are still getting to know through their lives, both personal and professional.
