Bought to replace a cheaper boom arm I’d been using for over 3 years that was pretty poorly constructed and always squeaked when moved.

This arm is much sturdier and built with much better materials - though the plastic used at the joints is somewhat frail and can see them breaking if over-tightened. Still though - it’s smooth and quiet when making any adjustments to mic placement. The built-in cable management is a nice plus that helps keep things looking clean. I noticed that just like other reviewers mention, this arm requires you to mount a heavier mic as without one it will begin to rise due to the high spring tension. This was not an issue though with my Yeti classic and Logitech shock mount combo, though. Thankfully, it stays in place until I move it.

I use a Blue Ember XLR Condensor Microphone, the arm is a little stronger so sometimes the microphone will not sit exactly where I want it to. It will slowly float up and away sometimes. But if you are using a heavier microphone it will probably work great.

In less than 4 months, I've gone through 3 of these. One went "bad" with the center elbow popping and causing the entire arm to collapse. Definitely a word of advice, follow the instructions and NEVER over tighten any of the joints. If the head of the mount where the mic is attached keeps drooping, make sure to set the internal tension first. Then hand-tighten the elbow joints. If you try to force the mic to float you are adding too much weight that the Compass was never meant to handle.

I do appreciate the built-in cable management and build quality. Just wish it was a little more forgiving. Also, watch out if. you have a thin desktop (glass, acrylic, metal, etc.) The C-clamp on the base has about 3/4" of a minimum gap that'll require a shim to hold it in place. I used an old Apple power brick to secure mine.

Excellent microphone boom

I’ve had two of these which I use for my Yeti microphone. The first lasted 5 years before giving out one day when the cleaning folks decided they needed to move it while cleaning. I got a refurb to replace it only because it was available next day and a new one would take a couple weeks to arrive. It’s worked like a champ.

This design is not perfect. The joints can be tough to tighten down sufficiently and it may take some fiddling to find a good stable spot. If I was moving it all the time I’d probably upgrade, but pro models start at more than double the price.

Not A Great "Renewed" Experience. But Maybe Still Worth It.

So I really wanted this Mic Boom Arm. I could only find it as a Renewed product. That's okay, as many of the negative reviews for the original product said that the tension cable that strengthens the arm had bad quality control; some were just too short and therefor too tense no matter how much you loosen it. Maybe the Renewed version has fixed that issue? Nope. it is still a problem (I have a very heavy Mic w/ a Shock Mount, so it is a minor problem that will be worse for you the lighter your Mic is. you try to adjust the mic arm but it will kind of "spring" back to where it wants to rest, not where you want it to rest.)

As far as the renewed experience goes...the first Renewed Mic Arm arrived packaged in a way so that parts of the Mic Arm pushed firmly against each other and cracked the aluminum on the frame. or it was cracked during the renewal process and they thought it was still cool to ship it out that way. due to that issue and the tension cable problem, I ordered a replacement, and the second Mic Arm was in much better condition, but still had the same tension cable problem.

I like the Mic Arm enough that I'm willing to keep it, and fix the tension problem by following a youtube tutorial.

I replaced a generic mic mount with this and haven’t looked back. High quality materials. Precision machining. Thoughtful design. Worth it to me, given that I use it 8+ hours a day.
