It has literally been decades since I last had Nuteena. We ate a lot of vegetarian meat substitutes from Loma Linda/Worthington growing up in the 80's, so I'm no stranger to their line of food. Having not had Nuteena for so long, I was interested in buying some Nutolene to try it out. Upon opening the can, that familiar smell told me that it was a recipe very similar to Nuteena.
Getting the stuff out of the can can be a challenge. I recommend popping the top, then cutting the bottom off with an edge can opener, squeeze the can to break the bond of the food with the side of the can, then push it out the bottom with a solid object (measuring cup, for instance) from the top. Once you break it free and get it started, it'll come out fairly easily.
This recipe appears to be much less strong in that Nuteena taste and creamier. I sliced it up into half to 1/2 inch slices and got 7 out of a can. That's slightly less than a dollar per slice. You can slice it thinner and get even more slices out of it, which make it fairly inexpensive.
The product has very few ingredients and appears to be minimally processed. I don't know how they get the flavor out of such few ingredients, but it's tasty.
Vegetarian meat is an acquired taste and you've most likely never tasted anything like this. It's difficult to describe its taste to the uninitiated. I recommend just buying a can and see if you like it. In my view this would make a great meat substitute for tuna salad, or a sandwich spread.
My first can, I fried up the patties and made a sandwich. Tasty stuff. I like it. I think I like it better than the old Nuteena, which had a much stronger taste.
