4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read. Not realistic by any means, but far from boring!

Kat Donovan, the main character in Coben's Missing You, is a NYPD Detective. There seem to be at least as many mysteries in her personal life as her professional life.

Her grandfather and father were both cops. Her grandfather was not able to handle it when his wife became terminally ill, deserted her in her time of need, returned too late, then killed himself with his service revolver. This is mentioned at the beginning of the book, to show the lineage of 'damaged cops' that Kat comes from.

Kat's dad was murdered by a hit man for the mob. Early on in the story, the hit man recants his confession from his death bed directly to Kat. This leads to one big mystery, if he didn't kill Kat's dad, who did?

Right around the same time that Kat's dad was killed, Kat became distraught and withdrawn and this caused her fiance to leave. This was 18 years ago, and she has not heard from him since. She has never gotten over him, because he was the love of her life.

Kat's best friend, a gorgeous Private Investigator named Stacy, signs her up for a dating site. Kat decides to give it a look. Wait, there's Jeff! Hmmm.. How to approach? She decides to send him a youtube clip of a song that was extremely meaningful to both of them. They were engaged, and he should remember this. They used it to sign notes. She is confident that this is the perfect overture.

Whoops! Jeff has no clue what the song is about. This starts off mystery number two. What is going on there? Is it Jeff, but he doesn't remember her? Not Jeff?

Soon after, a college aged boy, Brandon, comes to see her at work. His mom was on the same dating site, went away for a trip with a guy she met, and hasn't sent him the texts she promised. Ok, she did sent some texts... but she signs 'love', not miss you, and she always says 'mom', even though he knows who she is!

In the meantime, we are let into another mystery that Kat is not yet aware of. A socially awkward man named Gerard expects to have a romantic trip with Vanessa. Instead, he ends up buried under the ground in Amish country. Occasionally he is brought up to take a walk up a path. Could this be related to any of the other mysteries?

I wouldn't consider any of these spoilers, as this is all revealed early on in the book. As the story unfolds, more mysteries are added.

Reasons I did not give 5 stars: This book requires quite a bit of suspension of reality; the plot comes together a little too neatly. The characters have a caricature-like quality - Stacy and Aqua made me wince at times.

Reasons I enjoyed it: It kept a good pace. Despite the plot having one (or two) too many coincidences to resemble reality, this book was strangely compelling. I found myself wanting to read on to see what outrageous thing might happen next. It was far from boring!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Coben at his best!

MISSING YOU (Pub. 2014) is one of Harlan Coben's best books yet -- a slam-dunk 5-star read all the way through.

The author does a fantastic job of keeping the story moving, with tension constantly ratcheting up to the very last page. I always appreciate the author's writing style, and Coben manages to bring his wonderful 'voice' and a couple worthwhile messages to these page without it feeling the least bit like author-intrusion -- we stay firmly in the moment and the characters' heads at just the right level. We also get a detective-mystery without it feeling like a same 'ol-same 'ol tale, which is no easy trick.

The book opens with Kat Donovan, an NYPD detective, sitting on a barstool in an Irish pub, next to her BFF. Stacy informs her that she's just done Kat a favor by plugging her into an on-line singles website. Kat takes it in stride until she's back home and spots her years-ago ex-fiancé on the singles site, and that's when the trouble starts.

The main story line comes in on an unexpected, sideways slide, along with a second subplot mystery related to the eighteen-years-ago murder of Kat's father. But the cherry subplot on top of this gourmet cupcake-of-a-book is the twisty question-mark behind Kat's fiancé unexpectedly breaking things off with her shortly after her father's murder.

In classic, beloved Harlan Coben style, this story has lots of twists and unexpected tangles, several 'I-didn't-see-that-coming' surprises, a rock-solid story line, believable and really sick bad guys, all enmeshed in an insidious, intriguing way. Plus some very current techno-savvy swindles that will keep you up at night just thinking about how real-world this plot line could be.

The story is a stand-alone, but we faithful readers get a quick little fun-jolt from a couple series characters (Wynn and a bad-guy pimp)being referenced in a peripheral way in the course of things unfolding. Coben gets fan bonus points for that touch.

MISSING YOU easily passes the 5-star litmus test, which is knowing I'll gladly re-read it down the road, and highly recommend it to my friends and fellow thriller readers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Online Dating at Its Worst!
Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2014
This book was interesting to read, it takes some of the headlines we read about online dating gone wrong and brings the danger to a whole new level. The characters were interesting, although I would have liked to have understood the motivation behind the hapless online daters' characters better. Personally, when a book is a mystery, I like the clues to be revealed to me a little at a time so I have a chance to figure it out OR have them all come together perfectly at the end to take me completely by surprise. While a good read, this book did not do either of those things. It felt a bit like the author was trying to do that, but just couldn't make it work. As a result, all the reveal is in the last few pages, and I gotta say, "You really don't know?" in answer to questions by the detective is such a silly one that is used over and over -- of COURSE she doesn't know -- if she did, would she be asking? Also there are some things you can forgive your lover for so the last two pages here are a stretch. I doubt any relationship can sustain that kind of betrayal. You really don't know? Well, guess you will have to read "Missing You" to find out!
