About this item

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The most enduring detectives in American crime fiction are back in this electrifying thriller of art and brutality from the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense.

Los Angeles is a city of stark contrast, the palaces of the affluent coexisting uneasily with the hellholes of the mad and the needy. That shadow world and the violence it breeds draw brilliant psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware and Detective Milo Sturgis into an unsettling case of altruism gone wrong.

On a superficially lovely morning, a woman shows up for work with her usual enthusiasm. She’s the newly hired personal assistant to a handsome, wealthy photographer and is ready to greet her boss with coffee and good cheer. Instead, she finds him slumped in bed, shot to death.

The victim had recently received rave media attention for his latest project: images of homeless people in their personal “dream” situations, elaborately costumed and enacting unfulfilled fantasies. There are some, however, who view the whole thing as nothing more than crass exploitation, citing token payments and the victim’s avoidance of any long-term relationships with his subjects.

Has disgruntlement blossomed into homicidal rage? Or do the roots of violence reach down to the victim’s family—a clan, sired by an elusive billionaire, that is bizarre in its own right?

Then new murders arise, and Alex and Milo begin peeling back layer after layer of intrigue and complexity, culminating in one of the deadliest threats they’ve ever faced.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Cost Wishing?

You can have money and be thought wealthy, but money isn't everything. Detective Milo Sturgis calls in his pal, Dr. Alex Delaware to help investigate the murder of a young photographer. The photographer was a son of a very wealthy man who cared little for the various ex-wives and children he left behind. He provided for them financially but that was all. The photographer's last project involved a number of homeless people. A kind hearted man, one whom Delaware suspects felt guilty for his fortunate circumstances, treated all the participants well and paid them generously. But could one of the "Wishing" participants have become greedy and returned to collect more?
Interesting family dynamics or lack thereof are explored. The close friendship of Milo and Alex, two very different people is always a positive aspect of the series. Alex's insights into the criminals motives, as well as those about the victims are well written and sensible making him a believable psychologist. Kellerman's novels are consistently enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Delaware Novel

Kellerman's Delaware novels are some of the very best crime fiction published. In this book, Alex Delaware and detective Milo Sturgis investigate the murder of a well known photographer who shot a series of photos using homeless people posing in costumes that represent dreams of better lives. As a result they learn more about the lives and aspirations of this population. And more people die. Insights into the lives of the homeless as well as people's perceptions of the project and its subjects help make the book relevant. The ending chapters are tense. A very fine read.

Halfway through and I'm completely baffled who's killing people. So many good clues but pointing to so many weirdos. Can't wait to see who it is.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just o.k. - not one of his better ones.

Just o.k. - not one of his better ones. A little slow and mopey. The potential it had at the beginning disappeared. They inched along interviewing tons of people - then at the last minute solved it and found the guy.

Alex Delaware feels like an old friend now. His latest adventure with Milo finds them solving the case, but with a complication. It’s a fast read, as they all are. If you haven’t read the entire series, dive in. Definitely worth the time.

For fans of mysteries, police procedurals, and murder.
Would I recommend this one? In a heartbeat! After reading as many Alex Delaware novels as I have, I've come to think of Milo and his merry band of junior detectives as friends. Comfortable with their idiosyncrasies as well as their strengths, it makes me curl up on the couch and settle in for a treat when I begin each new book. Robin, Rick, Spike, followed by Blanche, even the Koi, make me feel at ease. I love their back stories and how that contributes to the pace of the stories. The murders are always off kilter, strange, and mysterious puzzles to be pieced together by the dynamic duo of Alex and Milo. I have yet to read one yet that I haven't liked, and I've been reading Kellerman's books since the mid-1980s. I hope to read many more.
