About this item

An instant New York Times best seller

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Banker's Wife, worlds collide when an FBI agent investigates a string of grisly murders on Long Island that raises the impossible question: What happens when the primary suspect is your father?

FBI Agent Nell Flynn hasn't been home in 10 years. Nell and her father, Homicide Detective Martin Flynn, have never had much of a relationship. And Suffolk County will always be awash in memories of her mother, Marisol, who was murdered when Nell was just seven.

When Martin Flynn dies in a motorcycle accident, Nell returns to the house she grew up in so that she can spread her father's ashes and close his estate. At the behest of her father's partner, Detective Lee Davis, Nell becomes involved in an investigation into the murders of two young women in Suffolk County. The further Nell digs, the more likely it seems to her that her father should be the prime suspect - and that his friends on the police force are covering his tracks. Plagued by doubts about her mother's murder - and her own role in exonerating her father in that case - Nell can't help but ask questions about who killed Ria Ruiz and Adriana Marques and why. But she may not like the answers she finds - not just about those she loves, but about herself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!

Having grown up in Suffolk County, I was looking forward to reading this story and Cristina did not disappoint! I definitely felt like I was back home, and grateful that I could picture all the places she was talking about. I really feel connected to the characters, and toward the end of the book there were a lot of plot twists I did not see coming. I especially felt the need of the younger people in the book to want to leave the island. A lot of time the older generations stay, but the younger ones want out as soon as possible. I will definitely be checking out more books by Cristina Alger

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read but the end feels rushed

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It started off incredibly slow for me and I had to force myself to read the first 20-30 pages. After that, the book was an easy read. The author did a good job setting the scene and making the contrast between the rich and poor parts of the county and the people who inhabit them. The main character is easy to like and there is a plot twist or two that I was not expecting, though the major story line was easy to determine pretty early on. The end of the book does seem rushed and does leave some to be desired. I would still recommend reading the book.

When paperback came in the mail I thought it didn’t look big and wasn’t expecting much. I was wrong, this is a gripping story and read! Several surprises along the way, I’ll be looking for more from this author!

FBI agent Nell Flynn returns home to Long Island to scatter her father's ashes. His motorcycle skidded off the highway. It was two in the morning. Nell has his mangled Harley-Davidson examined & it's determined that the brake line was cut. His death was no accident. The cut was intentional. The intent was murder. Whoever did this meant business.

Nell intends to meet with her dad's lawyer, sign papers, close bank accounts & sell his house. Then, put down roots elsewhere. The lawyer informs Nell that her father's estate is substantial. He was a cop. What was he doing with money in an offshore account? It upsets her that she knew so little about his life.

Nell gets sidetracked when a woman walking her dog finds a body of a girl buried in the dunes. The body was dismembered, wrapped in burlap & buried amid multimillion-dollar oceanfront mansions. Once the press connects this case to the body found last summer, the floodgates will open. Both girls were prostitutes & shot at point-blank range in the head. Their limbs were cut off & tied to their torso with twine. They even looked alike; long dark hair, petite, attractive. The crime scenes are nearly identical. The cases mirror each other almost exactly. They're working under the assumption that one killer was responsible for both murders.

Nell can't shake the feeling that her father's death is inextricably bound up in these murders. She becomes deeply involved in a complicated investigation & finds herself in the center of a MAJOR political scandal.

Easy read. The story moves fast however at times feels rushed. But a good book for a short vacation read or book club read.

FBI agent Nell Flynn goes home to Suffolk County after her father’s death. From there a series of events unfold that keep Nell in town as she unofficially investigates a murder, learns the truth about those who were around her in her earlier years and opens Pandora’s box to a much bigger operation.

A good book. Lots of turns and unexpected events. Sad in many ways as she discovers all the twist and turns.

This is an OK read. I chose it because I had read The Banker’s Wife” by same author - not as good as aforementioned book.
