About this item

What does your brain have to do with experiencing joy?

A lot more than most of us realize.

In this breakthrough book, Dr. Earl Henslin reveals how the study of brain imaging turned his practice of psychotherapy upside down—with remarkably positive results.

He shares answers to puzzling questions, such as

  • Why isn't my faith in God enough to erase my blue moods?
  • Why haven't I been able to conquer my anger? Pray away my fear and worry?
  • Why can't I find freedom from secret obsessions and addictions?

Using the Brain System Checklist, Dr. Henslin explains what happens to the 5 Mood Centers in the brain when any of those areas are out of balance. This is great news, especially for those tortured by the fear that something is fundamentally wrong with them when the problem actually lies between their ears.

Listen to this practical, easy-to-understand, and often entertaining book, and you'll know exactly how to nourish your mind, balance your brain, and help others do the same. After all, the capacity for joy is a terrible thing to waste.

Accompanying charts, images, and additional resources are included in the audiobook companion PDF download.

I'm on the 4th chapter as of now and this book has helped me tremendously as a person diagnosed with Schizoaffective/Bipolar II disorder. The knowledge contained in this book has unlocked peace and joy with God. It has livened up my relationship with God and shattered the chains I was in. For those who do not think knowledge is power then you should read this book.

One of the things that science has given us is ways to treat illness and disease. This book by no means dismantles belief in God and I sincerely believe that God gives us great minds and doctors to help us in need. In my personal opinion it is God that has laid the foundation of science and medicine, letting insight and discovery be lead by His Hand.

I find it astonishing that there are believers out there that think there is no place for science in the community. Their God is in a box waiting to be let out and live in fear of their comfort in what they consider to be "truth". If you think God is too small to be taken apart by any man or knowledge then you're living in the wrong universe. Read this book and be prepared to learn some intriguing facts.

For me, the measure of excellent non-fiction literature is when one begins to see the world through the lens that the author provides. I recently completed reading Dr. Earl Henslin's This is Your Brain on Joy. And, I was hooked from the first chapter when he described how he has come to incorporate technology (brain imaging) in his clinical treatment of thirty couples who were headed towards divorce.
My area of specialty is marriage. I have gone through much training on various marriage enhancement methods. But, when Dr. Henslin commented that twenty-nine of the thirty couples turned their marriages around by following the procedures to get brain scans (SPECT) and following the prescribed psychotherapy and medicinal regimen I was clamoring for more information. And, This is Your Brain on Joy delivers "in spades."
First, let me be clear. This book is primarily about the power of brain imaging to unearth the "abnormalities" that make our brains function at less than God's ideal when He first created us. While I have had some exposure to brain physiology during my own clinical training, I have never seen such an excellent effort at breaking highly technical terminology into language that can be understood by everyone. By substituting friendly, intuitive language (e.g., Basement of Giant Fears) to represent brain physiology (e.g, Basal Ganglia) Dr. Henslin is able to communicate the intricacies of the brain in a way that makes common sense. More importantly, the reader is able to identify his/her own areas of strength and weakness. Speaking of this, the book also includes an assessment that helps to identify how one's own life experiences are indelibly interconnected with one's brain health.
This book challenges all of us to think twice in our tendencies to be judgmental. He argues for more compassionate engagement because people are often held hostage by their brains. But, Dr. Henslin's book doesn't just point out the problem. He proceeds to offer natural, herbal remedies for many of the brain imbalances that are nothing short of miraculous from the testimonials included in the book. In some instances, prescription agents such as antidepressants may be suggested as well. The testimonies of people whose entire lives have changed (when they thought change was impossible) simply by following through with a brain scan and herbal or prescription medications.
I highly recommend this book because I have become convinced that many of the unhealthy behavioral patterns in our lives and in our marriages are a result of brain trauma that we may not even remember from years earlier. The results appear clear. Healthy lives and marriages require healthy brains. And, sometimes prayer alone may not improve the situation as much as if it was accompanied by a brain scan, the right herbal combinations, and a little encouragement.

As one who has suffered greatly and is working hard to come out on the other side with God's great Joy, I am truly thankful for Dr. Earl Henslin's (and others') studies on the brain. As I read through THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON JOY, I found myself wishing that I'd had a brain scan two years ago and another now to compare. Two years ago, I was in true crisis. It was bad enough that I lost my job, friends, reputation, and should have lost my family, as well. Anxiety was my constant companion. I was severely depressed and angry enough that I think my doctors should have hospitalized me.

    But God, my friends.

I have been seeking joy to such a degree that I am working on memorizing as many verses on joy as I can. I have written my own book on joy, JOY ACTIONS. And I have been reading voraciously everything I can get my hands on. Dr. Henslin's book THIS US YOUR BRAIN ON JOY has been an incredible addition to my joy study.

I begin to wonder if maybe I should go back to school and get doctorate in Joy....

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Title: Wonderful Book

This is a wonderful book on the role of joy in brain science for the layman. He ties in ancient wisdom regarding the same subject from the Apostle Paul at the end of the book. He sees Paul as an example of a person who has trained his brain ( with the help of God, the Holy Spirit) and has become mature and content.

He divides the book into sections of what he calls the brain house and gives each "room" which he calls mood centers clever names that describe their function. There are 5 of them. They are all found in Section 2 of the book and are as follows:

    1. The Pre-Frontal Cortex which he calls The Presidential Control Center.
2.The Cingulate Gyrus which he calls The Circular Gerbil Wheel
    3. The Basal Ganglia which he calls The Basement of Giant Fears
    4. The Deep Limbic System which he calls The Depressed Low-Mood Space
5.The Temporal Lobes which he calls The Temper Lofts

It is very entertaining and informative. After you read the book, I think you will have a much better idea of what goes on between your ears.

Amazing book with tons of helpful tips to better your mental health. I also love that the author does not separate spiritual health from mental health. They clearly overlap and affect each other.
