Sailing Alone is not so much about hero-sailors; instead, it encourages readers to think of sailing alone on a small boat as a way of listening nature. The book is about what the sea and its creatures teach. To be alone at sea is to be a learner. Lone sailors, as he chronicles from the many books published by such people, necessarily have their ecological, spiritual, and ethical senses honed by their experiences. Bernard Moitessier and Ellen MacArthur are the best of the heroes. Watching over every part of the book is Sandy--an old guy and a self-steering mechanism.
