5.0 out of 5 stars Spins if put together correctly!

These are a little tricky to put together, but once you figure it out it goes fast. Build the pinwheel on the white stopper (part E) placing the larger side of the stopper on a flat surface. Place the completed pinwheel on the pole (part A) with the larger side of the stopper 1st. Push until you hear a click. Pull the back of the pinwheel over the edge of the stopper to widden it, leaving the rest of the pinwheel on the stopper. The stopper is the part that spins.

Birds are building nests in very inconvenient locations very close to my house so I wanted a humane and pretty way to keep them at bay. I will say, the included instructions are not helpful. The installation video was helpful for a moment but not when I couldn’t figure out why my pinwheels didn’t spin. The video is also way too fast paced. It took me an hour to put them together (because of troubleshooting…and taking them apart and putting them back together again, four times before figuring out how to actually put them together AND have them spin). But, hopefully my instructions will help those of you who are struggling to put such a simple-looking item together. I really never thought I would have to post instructions for putting a pinwheel together but here it goes. Photos should correlate with each step.

1. Lay out one full pinwheel set
2. Start by inserting a section of pinwheel flap over the small hollow connector. The very important key here is to make sure the SLIM end is facing the OUTSIDE. the WIDE end should be facing the INSIDE.
3. Continue layering each pinwheel flap on top of the previous flap over the SLIM side.
4. You have completed the difficult part. Pat yourself on the back.
5. Put the decorative circular cover over top of the SLIM side to cover the pinwheel flap layers. I chose the silver color but it is reversible with a star on the other side.
6. Insert the white arm through the back of the pinwheel and into the WIDE part of the connector.
7. It will be difficult to push the arm into the wide connector but continue pushing until you hear a CLICK. Yes, it will click. If it has not clicked, it has not been secured properly and will not spin.
8. You are done! Reward yourself for your patience.

I could only make 9 pinwheels because I was missing one connector. I was able to tape the pinwheel sections together and get by without the connector. It still spins, but not as well as the ones with connectors. I will say that the durability seems pretty good as I had to take them apart multiple times and put them back together to fix my mistakes. Nothing ripped which was impressive. If you do not mind spending a little bit of time to put them together, I would say buy them. If you have arthritis in your hands or difficulty using fine motor skills, just buy them at the dollar store instead. I really only bought these for the patriotic pattern.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best

I originally got a shiny patriotic pinwheel from Walmart for 1$ loved it and wanted more, I decided to order from Amazon for bulk, NOT the same quality and more expensive. They don’t spin as well, a little annoying to put together, and more expensive. They work and are cute; but will stick with the Walmart version next time.

Worked on small birds for awhile then they follow the other birds and are now landing and picking. Mainly Blue Jays, Pigeons and Doves are not affected by these pinwheels. Its windy spinning like crazy too. I got them for my vegetable garden boxes as i have planted seeds.

Changed my rating from 1 to 3 as the seller reached out to make things right.
I made these pinwheels work in combination with a quick scarecrow idea. Now this is working keeping everything away, birds, squirrels and i havent seen a cat. Animals sense the pinwheel motion but the scarecrow is not moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy once you understand how to do it

When I first opened the box I was ready to throw them away. I knew I had to assemble them myself before offering but the instructions are not good. Once I figured out the first one I had it done to about 1 minute to assemble one pinwheel. I took pictures and a video, hopefully it’ll help others. There’s a black “spike” that his on the bottom of the stem and a white piece that goes in the top. The instructions are ok for that part. It’s putting the pinwheel part together that is tricky. There is a tiny white center piece which one side is larger than the other. I suggest placing this piece big side down on a flat surface. Then put the pinwheel over the top of it. At this point the little side is poking through the middle of the pinwheel. Take any of the little cut out circle holes on the edge of the pinwheel and push it on the piece. Just move around the outside anti clockwise putting each hole on the center piece. See my video for details. When you put it in the stem make sure to push it all the way on so it spins properly. I hope this helps other people build them! They are really cute and once I figured out how to build them it was a really quick process. I haven’t placed them outside yet (it’s almost midnight here!) but I’ll update if I have any issues!

Intuitive and extremely easy to assemble, spin fine... I cannot comment on durability, though they appear to be more durable than something you might purchase at a souvenir stand or truck stop.

I wanted to try these this year since I live in such a windy place and the long tape always deteriorates and rips and flies out of my yard and I feel guilty littering. Like a lot of the comments here after assembly if you push the plastic center all the way over the dot in the middle it does make the pinwheel pretty stiff and it doesn’t spin easily, that being said I live in such a windy climate they have a bit of a random spinning effect which would still startle off birds so hoping this will keep my garden safe!
