About this item

A kit of magnets and accessories for science experiments, 16 pieces in total
What is S.T.E.M.? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, which constitutes many of the areas educators look to cover for science based activities. We are proud to say that his kit has a strong focus on STEM. A great physics STEM kit for young kids to enhance what is learnt from physics class.
Learn the basic Physics principles and investigate the Physics and magnetism by doing experiments with these magnets kit set.
Physics is a practical science. Good quality, appropriate physics activities and investigations are not just motivational and fun: They can also sharpen students’ powers of observation, stimulating questions. And they are the key to enhanced learning, clarification and consolidation of theory.
Some popular activities done with the kit: What sticks? Attractive or Repulsive? Earth is a giant magnet. Seeing magnetic fields? Interactive forces.

I’m a physicist who spent over ten years developing high-speed magnetically levitated flywheels. I just needed a marked color magnet so bought this kit for next day delivery. I noticed that someone had trouble levitating the spindle because a rubber band was missing (any small rubber band will work). But another thing to be aware of is that the 4 stationary magnets may not stay fixed in the base (with pole orientation all pointing the same direction). Slipping a couple sheets of paper when the magnets are pressed into the base will help tightly secure them (see photo). And the magnets need to all be pressed all the way down, at the same height. Also, playing around with the axial orientation of the magnets on the rotating spindle makes a big difference in the stability of the unit (rotor spindle magnets need to also point the same direction as base). I like teaching physics and think this is a fun little package for children to explore, and recommend it. An interesting “thought experiment” is to visualize the magnetic flux field lines (think of the orientation of the iron filings by the bar magnets). This helps to understand how the spindle stays levitated (by imagining the field lines); and why the spindle is only stable with one point fixed (the pin-spindle interface). Otherwise, the stationary magnetic suspension here is unstable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough for homeschool fun!

This set is fun, but not the highest quality magnets. They work well enough for us to have plenty of homeschool pre-k fun, as I’m able to easily guide my daughter through each set up. It’s also fairly small, but again, that’s fine because it’s for a 4 year old to handle. we’ve had trouble getting the magnet car to really go forward, rather than twist (see video). Overall, it’s worth the low price for a fun learning activity.

This kit is not very good. The magnets are very weak and barely make magnetic field lines in the provided iron filings (maybe too many filings in the sight container ?) The compass pointer has the red portion on the south pointing end, not the the north, that’s odd. The packaging is nice and all of the components fit nicely in there. It could be better. Look elsewhere if you really want to learn with magnets
