4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but pricy, concept

I love the idea of these wands. I’ve been bothered by a red face, and sometimes a headache if I drank more than a glass, when drinking red wine for my whole adult life. I was happy to try these wand to remove sulfites and histamines to see if they made a difference. Each wand is good for one glass of wine. You swirl the wand in the glass of wine for at least 2 minutes for 4 oz of wine. I did it for 3 minutes, just to be sure, because my wine glass was pretty wide, so the wine wasn’t as deep as it needed to be to cover the whole working area of the wand, plus I had more than 4 ounces. I don’t think the wine tasted any different, but I’m not sure it was as effective as it should be given that I had more than 4 ounces of wine. My face didn’t feel flushed until I had a small glass of port after the red wine, but I didn’t look at myself after the wine only to see if it was flushed without me feeling it. I didn’t use a wand on the port because it was such a small amount, there is no way I could swirl it with the wand, and even if I could, it felt like it would be a waste of the purifying wand for such a small amount of alcohol. So, I need to test it again. But, this leads me to why I knocked one star off—the price. At $3 per wand, this is not something I would use with every glass of wine I drink. I suppose if I had a severe reaction to sulfites and/or histamines, I would bite the bullet. But, I don’t. So, can I justify the cost?

I’m also concerned about the waste these wands create. From the outside package to the wand itself to the box it came in. The package has a QR code that says, “Scan to recycle,” but when I did, it took me to a webpage that said they don’t have recycling capability yet. They had a form so you could sign up to be notified when it was available, but that seems like a great way to ensure I get more spam emails, so I didn’t.

I did get curious and cut the used wand open to see what was in it. I still don’t know what it is, but it was interesting! I will experiment with it again and update my review if I have new info.

Review of Ullo Uno Wine Purifying Wands. Removes Sulfites and Histamines to Enjoy Vineyard-Level Ullo Pure Wine On the Go (4 Wands):

I'm not an everyday wine drinker. I drink wine on occasion and generally only one glass. However, I prefer good red wines so when I open a bottle at home, I vacuum seal it, and then have a glass every night until it is gone. I don't generally have a concern about headaches, but I do like to avoid food additives when possible. Sulfites are naturally occurring in wines, but I know that winemakers also add sulfites to prevent bacteria growth, hence using it as a food preservative. The wands come in four individually sealed packages in a box of four. I like the idea that these wands remove sulfites from the wine before I drink it. They are easy to use, just dip one in the glass and stir for 2+ minutes. Although not being a patient person, 2 minutes seems like a long time when I'm ready to sit down to dinner with my wine. I do think that the wands change the flavor of the red wine, making it taste somewhat diluted to me. I liked the idea that these are recyclable, but when I scanned the bar code on the product for more information, it merely goes to the general Ullo wine website. I searched and searched on the website, trying to find their information about recycling. All I could find was a FAQ that said the wands are not compostable. Given this and the information on the website that indicates the sulfite-removing granules inside the filter are a polymer, I don't want to contribute more "never goes away" items to landfills. Eventually, I found on their Products (selling) page, an Uno Concierge Recycling Bag that sells for $10. The description says, "Simply purchase a recycling bag here, fill with up to 30 wands and send it back with a prepaid label and receive a $10 coupon to use on any purchase of $25 or more." It doesn't say if a prepaid label is included with the bag. For the everyday wine drinker, I don't see how these would be a good value. However, if you are one of the 1% of people who have a real sulfite sensitivity, these may be valuable.

These really do help if you get a wine headache! I love that this version is recyleable, so I don't feel as bad about the single-use product. Will definitely buy more!

These work well and are a good value. They've helped me be able to drink red wine again. Easy to use and don't detract from the taste. Looks subtle and efficient.

5.0 out of 5 stars They work, and don't add any taste, would reserve these for nicer wines.
Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2024
They seem to work really well and do so without adding or effecting the flavor of the wine. I was thinking the wood or materials might leave an after tase but happily I didn't have this happen on any of my glasses. A four pack is gone in one night with a few friends so I would want to use these on nicer wines but then again its the cheaper ones that seem to need it more. That leaves you in a dilemma of using an item that cost more than the wine might. We used them in a night and with a few rather nice bottles so in that case I feel it was worth it making a nice wine even better. I don't drink too often so when I do I really want to enjoy it and wouldn't mind adding these to the evening and a few glasses. Overall they actually work and surprisingly well so when it comes down to it, I don't really have any complaints on that front.
