5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value

I am new to the violin, but have played several other instruments. I decided to try the violin after seeing that there are many examples on Amazon that are highly rated yet affordable. I did some research, found many articles denouncing "cheap Chinese violin shaped objects" and so on, and decided to trust the reviews. I am not disappointed in the least. The instrument that I received appears to be very high quality. It is a very attractive instrument an appealing finish and genuine flame maple as per the photos. The instrument holds a tune very well and despite playing it for around 2 hours per day, I haven't had to do more than a small adjustment on one or two strings every other day or so. It is a very resonant instrument with a sound that projects impressively.

The workmanship isn't entirely flawless; on close inspection some minor imperfections are evident, but nothing that would even be noticed save under a close inspection.

The included extras are nice. In particular, it is reassuring to have an extra bridge and the instruction book has more interesting pieces than I expected, such as for example the theme to the 2nd movement of Dvorak's New World Symphony. These are fun and inspiring to play.

The shoulder rest and tuner are adequate, but not exceptional. I ordered other pieces and use these instead. I also ordered a nicer bow, though I haven't found those included to be obviously bad. Someone more experienced than I could better evaluate the included bows.

Overall, by all appearances this is a remarkable value and I have no regrets about this purchase. This instrument inspires me to play, and I am confident that it is of sufficient quality to carry me to at least an intermediate level of proficiency before the need for an upgrade becomes obvious. Of a first instrument, I can scarcely conceive of greater success than inspiring these statements while simultaneously being quite affordable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner violin

Violin came set up. Violin, two bows, one set of strings (already on violin), case, rosin, shoulder rest, tuner with 2xAAA batteries (which were dead on arrival), extra bridge.

Violin looks nice, and sounds surprisingly good. Two pegs tended to slip slightly, but within two days of receiving it they easily stay in place now with no modifications or anything applied. One fine tuner was defective (G string tuner), the screw bypassed the tuner lever when screwed in and needed to be replaced. My luthier replaced it at no cost.

Bows look good, are light colour hair and good curve. No rosin applied (as expected) on new hair. Lightly scratch the rosin with scissors or knife, makes initial application easy. Rosin is a nice light colour and works fine.

Shoulder rest is not very 'squishy' nor feels particularly solid, but does what it should. Something a little more solid and padded is one of the first things I want to get.

Tuner seems surprisingly decent as well. Batteries were dead when they arrived (2xAAA), but the tuner works consistently and has a built in metronome feature.

Beginner's manual has some of the basics of learning violin from a self-help perspective.

Overall, minus two dead AAA batteries and one fine tuner that didn't work quite right, the violin looks fantastic and sounds very good for the price. I have absolutely no regrets buying this violin instead of a $400-500 piece locally.

If you're thinking about getting this to play seriously or to just give it a shot, you can't go wrong with this very fun violin.

4.0 out of 5 stars It was worth the money when purchased
Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2022
I ordered this over two years ago as an adult beginner. It was priced higher than the current offering and, according to reviews in other places, was the only Cecillo offering at the time that was not a violin shaped object. I had to setup the bridge when it arrived and I found lots of videos that got me up and running. It sounded okay but not great for a beginner. More of that was my ability than the instrument.

I learned to play a few songs and never appreciated the sound under my ear especially on the G string. Removing the fine tuners on all but the E string improved the sound greatly. I did snap the D string while tuning immediately after removing the tuners and bought a replacement locally with the same strings. At the shop I was told they thought the sound post was misplaced but I would need to leave it and come back later to retrieve the instrument. I opted not to do this and I haven’t felt the need to get this checked further.

The bows are not great but they work as they should for a student. After extensive use one of the bows started to break a lot of hair. I switched to the second bow and ordered a carbon fiber from Fiddlerman. Once that bow arrived I have not used the second bow that came with the violin.

The instrument looks great and feels great in the hands. Where the shoulder rest attaches has removed some of the varnish on one side. Probably my fault as I was initially moving it around a lot until I found the most comfortable spot.

The included shoulder rest sucks and I replaced it with a Kun.

Some people complain about the rosin but I haven’t had any issues.

People that recommended this violin in 2018-2020 no longer recommend it because it seems the quality has gone down. The current price is almost half what it cost two years ago. Considering real inflation and the current price of $200, this is almost 75% less money than two years ago. I have not touched any of their current offerings to be able to make a comparison but I would not buy it knowing the price has gone down so much. I would be afraid that quality matches the reduced price. I cannot say that has happened.

I do not regret this purchase but, if I had to do it over again, I would spend about $500 on a Fiddlerman Concert deluxe rather than this. I do enjoy it and continue to play it every day. I do not plan to replace it for quite awhile.
