Stack the States is a game where you stack US states, as the name implies. The game asks you questions based on landmarks, state abbreviations, flags, state names, boarders, capitals, and cities. All of these are multiple choice questions with no more or less than 4 boxes each with the name of the state and the state itself. Answering correctly will allow you to use the state. Drag and rotate it, and drop it when ready. Answering incorrectly clears all the false choices and centers the correct one. The state inside that box will tell you its name and say its city, landmark, etc (I am Florida, and Tallahassee is my capital).

Keep stacking until they reach the checkered finish line, and try to keep them balanced. The line starts low, but will move up the more you play. If you answer enough correctly when you finish, you get a random state to add to an outline of the US.

There are also flash cards you can view and bonus unlockable game modes to help you memorize the answers. The bonus games are unlocked when you gain a certain amount of states.

Map It shows you an outline of th US, and your job is to fill in the states. You are given a random state to place by tapping anywhere you think it goes. Tap the wrong place, and it will show you where it goes and then give you another. Misplace three times, and it's game over.

Pile Up (I don't remember what it is called) drops states automatically and tells you the nane of a state currently on the screen. Tap the right one to remove it. If you tap the wrong one, the correct answer will flash briefly. Clear all of them before they stack too high! There are three difficulties for this game.

Puzzler (don't remember this name either) gives you a random region's states (Northeast, midwest, etc). You have to put them together like puzzle pieces. This is great for remembering boarders, and my personal favorite bonus game.

Capital Drop drops states and boxes containing capital names on a conveyor belt. Match the capitals with the correct state to remove them, and don't let them fall off.

My personal opinion: Stack the States is a very fun and beneficial game for all ages. I remembered almost everything I learned from this game, and it helps with my school. However, it can be a little frustrating at times, and if you accidentally drop states too close inside of each other, they'll get stuck and wobble and slide which can potentially ruin everything. Frustration can't really be helped, I guess, so it's not a major flaw. States rarely get stuck (unless you're trying to) and normally move themselves out of the way if they aren't extremely close to the center of a state. I recommend you give this a try if you have trouble remembering some facts on the states or just want to learn more and retain knowledge. There's also another version that teaches about countries all around the world called Stack the Countries, which I will review some other time.

No malware at all in this app or its other version!

This app provides a truly fun, whimsical, visually stimulating way to learn the states. As a grown-up who memorized all the states' shapes and capital at a very young age, I primarily use this app for 1) to teach my kids the states/capitals/flags/landmarks and 2) to teach ME the states' flags. I never memorized the flags as a youth. We have allowed our very young boys, ages 2 and 4, to play this app because it is educational. The 4 year old has all the states memorized....all of them. The 2-year old has about 35 of the states memorized. I kid you not! A 2 year old can walk up to our wall map of the US and identify 35 of the states. I'm so happy to have this app in our lives. My older kids use it as a learning tool (3rd grader) or a refresher (5th grader). An aspect of the app that I think is exceptional, is that once you get the question correct, the state appears on the screen and you can manipulate it by rotating it 360 degrees. This is done before you drop the state onto the "stack". This feature is extremely powerful for visual learners. My boys understand how the intricate borders of the eastern states (which are often defined by rivers) match up with neighboring states solely because of the this feature. Thanks to Dan Russell-Pinson for creating this app!

EDITED TO ADD: Also, there are "bonus" games that you unlock as progress through the regular game. One is called "Map It" which has a blank US map and a state outline appears at the bottom of the screen and you must tap on its proper location. This is not terribly difficult to do for the larger western states, but for the eastern states, it can be a bit of a challenge. My 4-year-old has learned to complete "Map It" with no mistakes (if you make 3 mistakes, your game is over). All because of this great app! Another bonus game is "Puzzler". In "Puzzler" you are presented with a number of states from the same region (you get four states in "easy" mode and up to 15 or so states in "Hard" mode). The states are on the screen in jumbled manner. Your job is to connect them to each other, like a puzzle. It's an absolute phenomenal way to learn the states' relative borders to one another. Again, the 4-year-old in our home does this game and can show you exactly where the southern tip of Missouri touches Tennessee. There's one more "bonus" game whose name escapes me but you get states falling from above into a stack. Then you are prompted to "tap" a certain state (with words at the bottom of the screen). So in this big jumbled stack of states you have to find the state being asked for. Time matters, cuz if the states are stacked too high (i.e. if you aren't answering questions fast enough) the game will time you out. This is another favorite of the young-uns in our family. It requires an adult to read the state being prompted at the bottom of the screen but after a while, the pre-readers learn the patterns of the state's names and can do it on his/her own. Who knew this app would be a reading learning tool for preschoolers? I sure didn't. An unexpected surprise.
